I consider my friend Laura to be a very successful person, and I really admire
her. I think that most of her success lies within her strong willpower and
assertiveness. She never gives up when the going gets tough, she always makes
time to socialize with her friends, and she always makes everybody happy even
though she has a very busy life.

Most people will measure success by how much money a person has, how big
their wallet is, or how much stock they own in a multinational corporation.
However, my personal opinion of success is defined simply the amount of moxie
somebody has towards their goals. Laura is not rich or wealthy, but she has a clear
goal to go to a university after she finishes school to study psychology, so she can
help other people and get a good job. If anything defines success for me, it’s the
determination a person has towards their future, because it’s something I have as
well.

Laura lives with her mother at the moment, she is just about to turn 17, and
she is about my age. Her father doesn’t live with them, and that means Laura has
to work a job too. Right now she works at a grocery store called Countdown, and
even though anybody can get a job at a grocery store, that doesn’t mean she isn’t
successful. What Laura succeeds at is perseverance, she has been working for a
very long time, because she knows she has to help her mother and get into a good
school. I think her determination foreshadows her future success.

Laura has a lot of friends, and she constantly communicates with them
despite the fact that she usually does not have the time. If she senses that
something is on my mind, she will stay and talk to me even though she’s running
late or has somewhere else to be. Socially speaking, Laura is a successful person
because she cares about people and puts them before material things that are less
important. I can tell that she will be very successful in her profession because she
clearly understands the way people think and act.

Intelligence is also another factor for me that determines success. From my
point of view, Laura is a very intelligent person. She is capable of using logic and
rationality in everyday situations, and her reasoning is impeccable. She is very
selfless, but she still cares about herself. She knows just what to say to people at
the right time, and has the personality of a very successful person.

The question remains whether I want to be like Laura, and there is always
more than one answer to that question. However all of those answers could be
summarized with a short “yes”. Because, in a way I already am like her. We have
known each other for a very long time and I have learned quite a lot from her.
Whenever I sense that she is doing something in an interesting way that I don’t
know about, I emulate that action to increase my own possibility of success, and she
does the same if she sees success in me, because that’s the successful thing to do.

Laura and I are really good friends, I can even say that we are best friends.
However, I did not write about her simply because of this. I truly think that she is a
successful person because of the impact she has on every single person she meets.
Her personality is what makes her successful, not money, not fame, but personality
and character. If I could summarize this essay in one line, I would say that Laura
is one of the most successful people I’ve ever met because she has a prosperous
future ahead of her.
