      Aims of criminal sanctions

      Reform—by giving a harsh punishment to the offender, it is hoped that they will take a closer look at their life an try to do better and not repeat crimes. with the prison life being so bad it is hoped that the offender will not want to go back and become a better person by going strait.

      Retribution—retribution is focused on the belief that offenders should be punished or “pay for their crimes” it is societies way of getting revenge on the offenders for committing crimes

      Deterrence—generally deterrence focuses on stopping potential offenders from breaking the law by making them fear the consequences.

      Individual deterrence—it is hoped hat the criminal will remember the punishment they received the first time they broke the law and will discourage them from breaking the law a second time.

      Rehabilitation—focuses on changing the attitude of the criminal so they can re enter society without committing anymore crimes sometimes counceling will help find the reasons behind criminal offending.

      Compensation—the criminal may be ordered to give the victim an amount of money as compensation before receiving their sentence
