THIS JULY- Not Long Now
Given just the slightest chance, This July will battle your own brain for
the space between your ears. And 'Not Long Now', the Glasgow group's second EP, is their weapon of choice. This is indie rock with a fantastic grasp of both melody and metallic crunch; if you need a reference point or two then use names like Biffy Clyro,Brand New or Death Cab For Cutie. But there's a courageous burst of originality here as well. It's in the slow-burning heart of 'This Is My Parade' and the way the title track changes speeds without a care. And last, but perhaps best of all, there's an undeniably British flavour to all of this. Frontman Stewart Blamford holds on to his accent throughout and there are
constant echoes of earnest and original UK talent like The Copperpot Journals, Sucioperro and Hundred Reasons. This is simply very solid stuff; it's smart, sharp, catchy and creative. And it's just in time for summer too.

Technically diverse guitars coupled with thoughtful, tuneful vocals is a good start when trying to describe the music of This July, a three-piece alternative rock band from Glasgow. And the reason I use the phrase 'good start' is because even this doesn't fully do them justice – you would really need to add the superb musicianship, inventiveness, and the fact that they have managed to create a much-needed original sound in an otherwise stale genre, to fully explain what This July are all about. With all the essential ingredients in place, it is surely only a matter of time before they hit the big time.
