World Championships
It was a 180 shot match over 3 days, Fri, Sat and Sunday. (12th 13th 14th of October) There are 3 courses, Red, White and Blue. Red was the hardest and all the top shooters were placed to shoot that first. And with the very windy conditions the day we shot it, it raised the difficulty factor way up there. After match day 1, I had a 1 shot lead. I felt I shot well and I was very pleased with my wind reading skills that day.
On match day 2 all the top scores are placed in the same squadded together, again, to up the stakes! Wind wasn't as much a factor and at the end of the day, I still had my 1 shot advantage.
Match day 3. Again, all top scores are squad together. I did not shoot well and really should have put the match away. But I made a couple of errors and let my lead slip. I already had conceded to coming 2nd. I thought, my first attempt at a world title and being 2nd wasn't too bad a performance. FT is a long game and many things can happen over a 60 shot match. I put my head down and shot my game plan, no more mistakes, just keep shooting well. I blanked out the score board but I could see the guy in front was dropping shots. As it turned out, I was tied for 1st place! That meant a shoot off. I had thought long before the match, that if it came to a shoot off, I would win. Mad as that sounds, that's what I thought.
The shoot off is a sudden death deal. I lost the toss and the other shooter decided to go first. He scored so it was my turn. If I miss, it's all over. I scored too. Now they put out a much harder target and again he went first. He missed. All the other competitors and spectators were all watching this and you could hear their gasps and really feel their tension. I scored a hit so on we went. He missed again but this time I did not miss and the target went down. And I was the World Champion!

National Championships
The National Field Target Championships were held in Pulaski Tennessee on the 9th and 10th of June 07. It was a 120 shot match over two days in very hot and humid conditions.
I drove the 1100 miles with three other shooters from CT. We left Connecticut on Thursday the 7th at 8:00am and drove until 11pm and stopped in a hotel somewhere in Kentucky. We continued for Pulaski at 8:00am the next morning and finally arrived at our destination at 11:30am.
We headed to the shooting range and got our rifles and equipment all sorted. Temperatures were in the 90s and the wind was really blowing hard. And hearing the moaning sounds of disgruntled shooters, it was obvious it was playing havoc with practice scores! I was shooting well. I find I can judge the wind speed and direction accurately enough to put the targets down. I felt confident my rifle was set up and was hoping for the same wind conditions for the match.
Gear all set up it was then off to dinner with the 100 or so competitors. I like this part cause you get to meet shooters from all over the country in a relaxed atmosphere.
Sleep is always a problem before a big match but want the hell, I just lay in bed tossing and turning until I fell off.
Match day one. Up at 6:00am. Breakfast and gather rifle and gear and off we go. Match started at 9:30am. Weather was not to bad, 80s and a mild breeze. As expected, the wind picked up but this pleased me. Other competitors were dropping shots because of mis reading the wind. I didn't feel I was shooting my best but still after four hours of grueling competition I was tied for first place with two other shooters!
Match day two. Up at 6:00 and breakfast and off we go. Still hot as hell out there but I held it together after 60 shots to become the National Champion! It's a very hard sport because of exposure to extreme temperatures and having to concentrate hard for 60 shots. Also, target shooting is a sport were you really are competing with yourself so the right mental aptitude is essential. A normally very still and stable rifle hold turns into a rodeo when your mental state goes down hill!
After the awards ceremony the three lads I drove down with and myself had dinner together and jumped in the car for the very long but very happy journey home.
