The Northern Ireland man hoping to rule the gay world
Belfast Telegraph on Saturday, 31 January 2009, Brendan McDaid reported that....
Mr Gay Northern Ireland was today preparing to jet off to Canada to take part in the first ever Mr Gay World competition next week.
Londonderry native James Smallman is set to fly out to represent the province at the event, which runs from February 4 to 8.
The competition is set to take place at the idyllic mountain resort of Whistler, which will also be home of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympics Games.
The newly-branded global competition’s primary purpose is to identify leaders who will take responsibility not only in their own community but also act on the global stage speaking out for equal rights.
James (22), who comes from the Bogside area, landed the Northern Ireland title at the Mr Gay Ireland final in Dublin in October 2008 and will be competing against 24 finalists during four days of events at the Canadian resort.
He is being sponsored by local clothing store Bridal Elegance for the formal wear round and is currently seeking sponsorship for the casual wear section.
In addition to the Canadian trip to Mr Gay World, James, who took a leading role in the organising the Foyle Pride festival last year and is currently sitting on the Board of The Rainbow Project, will also be travelling to compete in the European finals to be held in Oslo, Norway in August this year.
A spokesman for the Rainbow Project said: “Mr Gay World is a positive role model and will work on humanising being gay and act as an LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) Ambassador on an international platform.
“The Mr Gay World Competition will see men from Africa, Asia, America, (South, Central and Caribbean), North America, Europe, Russia, The Middle East and Oceania vie for the covenant title in an indoor/ outdoor series of events.
“An international panel of judges aims to identify a strong leader with the ability to inspire those around him and fight for equality of all humans.”
The competition consists of physical tests and interviews, including an eco challenge.
The majority of the scoring is based on the qualities of being a role model, leader and effective communicator, as well as displaying compassion and a willingness to try new things and meet new people.
The remaining points are reserved for how well the delegate looks after himself, his personal style and attitude.
The winner of the competition will receive the opportunity to travel to various countries to help support or mentor Prides and other LGBT organisations.
Online voting will be available to James’ supporters and well-wishers at www.mrgayworld.org0 Comments 296 days

News from Iceland
A new center-left interim coalition government is set to take office in Iceland on Sunday and will propose April 25 as the date for an early election, the head of one of the coalition parties said on Saturday.
Steingrimur Sigfusson, head of the Left-Green party, made the comments after the Progressive party said it would support the incoming minority coalition in parliament.
The Left-Green party is forming a coalition with the Social Democrats who will be the senior partner.
"If everything goes as planned now a new government will take over on Sunday afternoon," Sigfusson told reporters.
He added that April 25 was the election date the coalition would aim for.
