Voting isn't a privlege...it is you YOUR right! Use it!
The women were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the night,
they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and with their
warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly
convicted of "obstructing sidewalk traffic."
They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head
and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They
hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed
and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.
Thus unfolded the "Night of Terror" on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.
For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.
So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because--why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?
When it opened, there was a sparsely attended screening of HBO's new ovie "Iron Jawed Angels." It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that we could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have our say.
One woman who had studied women's history, saw the HBO movie. She looked angry. She was--with herself. "One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie," she said. "What would those women think of the way I use--or don't use--my right to vote? All of ! us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn." The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her "all over again."
HBO will run the movie periodically before releasing it on video and DVD. I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum. I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order. It is jarring to watch
Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: "Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity."
Please pass this on to all the women you know. We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women.
Let me do the math: 1917 was 91 years ago. I know you don't want to hear this, but, we've come a long way, baby.
Please vote this election....McCain...Obama....whic
hever you choose...which you now have the right to do....VOTE!

And then the fight started..
When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive....so, I took her to a Gas Station.....
And then the fight started....

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security.
The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age.
I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home.
I told the woman I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later.
The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.
She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me and she processed my Social Security application. When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.
She said, 'You should have dropped your pants, you might have got disability, too.
And then the fight started.....

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion and I kept staring
at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.
My wife asked,' Do you know her?'
'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago and I hear she hasn't been sober since.'
'My God!' said my wife, 'Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'
And then the fight started.....

I rear-ended a car this morning. The other driver got out of his car, and you know
how sometimes you just get soooo stressed the little things just seem sooo funny?
Yeah, well I couldn't believe it.... he was a DWARF!!!
He stormed over to my car, looked up at me and shouted, "I'M NOT HAPPY!!!"
So, I looked down at him and said, 'Well then, which one are you?'
And then the fight started.....

Red Shirt Fridays:
If the red shirt thing is new to you, read below how it went for one man...
Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.
No, he responded.
Heading out I asked?
No. I'm escorting a soldier home.
Going to pick him up?
No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq. I'm taking him home to his family.
The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days.
I turned back to him, extended my hand and said, "Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do".
Upon landing in Chicago , the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom.............
'Ladies! and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor
of having Sergeant Steeley - of the United States Marine Corps - join us on
this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask
that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow
Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then
turn off the seat belt sign.'
Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American.
So here's a public "Thank You" to our military Men and Women for what they do so we can live the way we do.
Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the 'silent majority.' We are no longer silent and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.
Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of American's supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home! Thus, sending a deafening message that every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red.
By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once 'silent' majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on!
The first thing a soldier says when asked the question 'What can we do to make
things better for you?' is 'We need your support and your prayers.'
Let's get the word out and lead by example, with class and dignity, and wear something red EVERY Friday.0 Kommentare 559 Tage
