    This young company tackled this show’s theme of unemployment and the consequences it has on personal relationships with the right mix of enthusiasm and sensitivity. It is testament to their abilities as actors that they were able to convincingly play characters whose playing ages were, in the main, 20 years older than their actual ages. The 6 guys who made up “Hot Metal” gave strong individual performances but also bonded well in the ensemble pieces. Special mention must be made of Craig Soutar(Jerry) who was hardly off stage and Daniel Hall(Dave) whose mature singing voice belied his tender years. Rachel Crone(Georgie), Laura Merchant(Vicki) and Suzanne Matthew(Pam) gave strong performances as the independent but supportive wives. Ruthie Whyte(Jeannette) as the hard bitten but soft centred showbiz pro accompanist stole every scene she was in with her witty one-liners and put downs. An enthusiastic chorus, excellent choreography and well controlled orchestra added greatly to a most enjoyable evening.

    Director: Ruthie Whyte Musical Director: Bryan McCaffrey Choreographer: Lindsey Bates

    I was delighted to be invited to cover this show in the absence of Geoff and the youngsters did themselves proud. In the title role Peter Smith gave a very confident performance – if a bit hurried in his delivery. You obviously knew the words Peter, but we, the audience, missed some due to your haste. Apart from that, a good performance. Lewis Holmes as Fat Sam was in excellent form, commanding the stage at all times with an excellent accent. The leading females of the piece also showed great stage presence and Ailsa Davidson as Blousey and Sarah Sinclair as Tallullah were in great voice in their musical numbers, as was Michael Lewis as little Fizzy – his song and dance routine was top class. All other principals carried out their duties to a high degree and there were a number of nice touches, in particularly Bangles’ dressing room scene and Leroy and Bugsy’s duet in the boxing number. Add to that a well-drilled band and some nice singing and movement by the company and we had a most enjoyable show. Thank you.
