      From Cocaine to CocaCola

      One day, many, many decades ago in France, a man by the name of Angelo Mariani, was having a crazy party with a few friends. One of his friends brought a case of Bordeaux’s finest wine and another brought a bag of the finest Cocaine. As the night went on and many bottles of wine were drunk and many lines of Coke snorted, Mariani accidentally spilled some of the cocaine into his glass of wine. He drank it anyway. All of a sudden, he felt a high the likes of which had never been felt before. The following morning, after his hangover had gone, he worked on perfecting this mixture of wine and cocaine and dubbed the mixture “Cocawine”. The effects of cocawine were so great that it was drunk by Royalty and Popes alike!

      Meanwhile, in America, a war veteran turned Chemist with a severe morphine addiction called John Pemberton, caught wind of this cocaine and wine mixture and thought he could make a similar drink to aid his addiction. He got to work in his laboratory in Atlanta, Georgia. There, he made his own version of cocawine using cocaine from the coca leaf and added colanut to the mixture. He named it “Pemberton's French Wine Coca”. Pemberton’s version was as successful in America as Mariani’s version was in Europe. Pemberton sold his cocawine to high profile people such as scientists and scholars. It was marketed as a cure for, amongst other things, constipation and impotence. Droopy men and backed-up women were flocking in droves to purchase this wonder medicine.

      But when prohibition came into effect in America, Pemberton was under pressure to create a non-alcoholic version of his drink. So it was back to the drawing board. Pemberton decided to replace the wine with a sugary syrup and carbonated the drink. Despite the lack of alcohol, the drink was still a success. Pemberton renamed this new drink “CocaCola” after the two main ingredients, Coca leaf and Colanut.

      Now you know why CocaCola is so addictive.
