"What is in this name 'Teddy Bear' and Where did it come from?"

Inspired by an unsuccessful hunting trip of President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt who refused to shoot a helpless black bear cub - Clifford Berryman captured the incident in a cartoon for the Washington Post Newspaper on November 19, 1902. Shortly after this "Teddy's Bear" had become a mascot for President Roosevelt and Morris Michtom turned it into a plush jointed toy.

Not to be outdone, across the Atlantic, at the very same time jointed plush bears and soft toys were emerging. The most famous of these makers was Steiff and it wasn't until the Leipzig Fair in March 1903, when a New York department story buyer ordered 3000 teddy bears that their success began.
The teddy bear craze was underway and the soft toy manufacturers in both Europe and USA swelled in numbers in an attempt to keep up with demand. Every household just had to have one! A century old tradition had begun.

In this ever changing world of ours it is reassuring to think the Teddy Bear has remained with us, complete with memories of comfort and joy for over a hundred years. May he continue to bring happiness for the next one hundred years?
