    Everton -vs- Fulham
Starting 11 - Howard, Hibbert, Yobo, Baines, Distin, Neville (c), Pienaar, Osman, Rodwell, Cahill, Saha

Everton left it late to secure their first points of the Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Wigan.

Ex-Latic Leightion Baines slammed home an injury time penalty after Louis Saha had cancelled out Paul Scharner's second-half opener.

The scoreline was one that Everton fully deserved with the Toffees bossing proceedings for long periods of the game.

David Moyes gave a debut to Sylvain Distin and he and Joseph Yobo were largely untroubled in the first half, with Wigan taking the lead against the run of play after 56 minutes when Paul Scharner headed in.

The lead lasted only five minutes though, as Louis Saha was on target for the fourth time in as many games, himself heading home a Baines corner.

Earlier, Jack Rodwell dragged an effort wide inside four minutes after good work by Louis Saha, with Scharner's speculative effort for Wigan the next strike on goal.

Everton were the more adventurous of the two sides and soon Tim Cahill had a header easily grabbed by Mike Pollitt in the Latics' goal.

The Toffees forced a corner on the quarter hour and after it was half-cleared Rodwell's left foot strike was palmed over by Pollitt.

In way of a reply, Charles N'Zogbia saw his shot deflected wide by Rodwell but Everton were dominating proceedings.

Soon, a flowing move begun by the teenage midfielder saw Cahill feed Saha, the Frenchman forcing a point blank save from Pollitt on the half hour.

Ten minutes before the break Goodison enjoyed a lighter moment as Moyes was felled on the touchline by a sliding Hendry Thomas. The manager took it in good spirit but the Toffees couldn't break the deadlock before half time.

After the break it was more of the same as Hibbert's centre was just too high for Rodwell and Emmerson Boyce blocked from Osman after a lovely move.

Wigan underlined their potential threat as first Hugo Rodallega and then N'Zogbia went close with curling efforts.

It should have been a warning for the Toffees but instead Scharner was able to score yet another goal against Everton with a point blank header at the back post.

Jordi Gomez then struck the post with half an hour to go but Everton hit back almost immediately, Saha heading in Baines' corner.

Marouane Fellaini emerged from the bench with 20 minutes left snd his first action was to observe Thomas head Yobo's effort off the goalline.

Rodwell skidded another long ranger wide as Everton pushed forward looking for a winner with Moyes also introducing Jo to the match.

Then, with 15 minutes left Hibbert produced a perfect ball for Cahill to give Everton the lead, the Aussie's powerful header arrowed just wide though.

New man Jo was straight into the action as he was denied by Pollitt and Rodwell blazed the rebound over as Moyes' men had Wigan on the rack.

There was even a late debut for Biniyar Bilyaletdinov but it was Tim Howard who, tellingly, thwarted a six-on-two breakaway at the death.

And there was still time for more drama as Jo was felled in the box by Boyce and Leighton Baines slammed home the penalty.

  • PLAYERS IN 08/09

Lars Jacobsen: Signed on a free transfer having being released by German side FC Nuremberg. Jacobsen struggled with injuries last season and had asked to be released from his contract . He has plenty of experience having won the Danish Superliga three times between 2003 and 2007. In 1997 he was voted Danish under-19 Player of the Year and will provide good competition for right back Tony Hibbert.

Segundo Castillo: Red Star Belgrade have agreed to loan Castillo to Everton for one year with a view of a permanent move. The 26-year-old defensive midfielder is an Ecuador international and had received interest from Wigan and Blackburn. He has many titles to his name having helped El Nacional to two back-to-back national titles and helped Red Star Belgrade to a League and Cup double in his debut season.

Louis Saha: Bought as a replacement for Andy Johnson, Saha is an experienced Premiership player with 81 goals in 203 appearances. He spent 4 years at Fulham before joining Manchester United in 2004 for £12.8m. His time at Old Trafford was plagued with injuries and Saha soon found himself down the pecking order. Moyes is hopeful Saha can stay fit and provide support for Yakubu. Saha signed on an initial 2 year contract with the option of a further 12 months. The fee will depend on how often he plays.

Carlo Nash: A Toffee from birth, Nash signed on transfer deadline day for an undisclosed fee from Wigan. At 34, Nash has signed a 2 year deal with the option of a further 12 months. He spent last season on loan at Stoke where he helped them achieve promotion. He has also played for Preston, Manchester City and Middlesbrough.

Marouane Fellaini: Fellaini become Everton's most expensive transfer of all time when he signed on deadline day. The fee can rise up to £15m depending on appearances. He can play as a centre midfielder or in the centre of defence. At 21, he has already played 10 international games for Belgium. In 2 years at Standard Liege he played 84 games scoring 11 goals. He is expected to fill the gap left by the departure of Lee Carsley.

Jô: Signed on a loan deal from Manchester City, Jo will provide cover in attack following a string of injuries. Jo began his career with Brazilian side Corinthians before joining Russian giants CSKA Moscow where he formed a formidible partnership with fellow Brazilian Vagner Love. He netted 30 goals in 53 appearances befor joining Manchester City for a record fee of £18m. Having failed to make an impact at Maine Road City agreed to let him join Everton until the end of the season.

Seamus Coleman: Another player signed on deadline day, Coleman is a young Irish full back who has represented Ireland at under 21 and under 23 level. At only 20, he will be thrown into the reserve squad putting even more pressure on Tony Hibbert and Lars Jacobsen.

Went to the game in bolton on the weekend. I'd bleed for the club but the only word i can think to describe the performance on sunday is pathetic. Jo scuffed every shot he got, midfield have pretty much every ball away and the defence... Well they leaked 8 in the last two games. We need to get our best players out of rathbones treatment room and hope a bit of competition for places can get us back to where we should be. Jags making great tackles and keeping clean sheets and king louis popping up with a winner, COYB!!
