  • Best Rocky Film?

    1. Rocky 1 - The Classic v Apollo (actually a good film in its own right)
    2. Rocky 2 - Fights Apollo in the re-match (crazy training sequence)
    3. Rocky 3 - Fights Clubber Lang (Mr T) (very homo-erotic training sequence)
    4. Rocky 4 - Fights Ivan Drago (and Hulk Hogan) Makes awesome speech after to end the Cold War.
    5. Rocky 5 - (eliminated for being awful) - Rocky Balboa - New Film On The Block.

  • Peace By Inches. Al Pacino - Any Given Sunday - Amen...

i dont know what to say,really...
3 minutes...to the biggest battle of our professional lives...all comes down to today...
Either, we heal, as a team, or we're gonna crumble...inch by inch, play by play...to we're finished, we're in hell right now, gentlemen...believe me...
and...we can stay here, get the shit kicked out of us...or... we can fight our way back...into the light...we can climb outta hell...one inch at a time...now, i cant do it for you...im too old...i look around, i see this young faces, and i think...i mean,i've made every wrong choice a middle-aged man can make...I...eh...I pissed away all my money, believe it or not...i chased off anyone's who's ever loved me...and lately,I cant even stand the face I see in the mirror...you know, when you get old in life, things get taken from you...well thats....thats part of life...but, you only learn that, when you start losing stuff...you find out, life's a game of inches...so is football...because, in either game, life or fottball, the margin for error is so small, i mean, one half a step too late, or too early, and you dont quite make it, one half second too slow, too fast, you dont quite catch it, the inches we need are everywhere around us... they're in every break of the game, every minute, every second....on this team, we fight for that inch... on this team, we tear ourselves and everyone else around us, to pieces for that inch...we claw with our fingernails for that inch...because we know, when we head up all those inches, thats gonna make the fucking difference, between winning and losing!
Between living and dying!! I'll tell you this: in any fight, its the guy who's willing to die, who's gonna win that inch...and I know, if im gonna have any life anymore...Its because I'm still willing to fight and die for that inch...because, thats what living is! The six inches in front of your face...!! now, i cant make you do it, you gotta look at the guy next to you, look into his eyes!now, i think you're gonna see a guy, who will go that inch with you...You're gonna see a guy, who will sacrifice himself, for this team, because he knows, when it comes down to it, you're gonna do the same for him... Thats a team, gentlemen...and, either we heal,NOW, as a team, or we will die...as individuals...thats football, guys...thats all it is...now, what are you gonna do?

  • Edinburgh Accies - 24/03/07

A beautiful, sun drenched early Spring afternoon at Inverleith, the wind gently curling its way round the old place. Final league game of the season for the Mighty Threes. Bestowed with the honour of playing on the main pitch whilst the back pitches are spared for the thwack of leather on willow. Brand new ball, freshly pumped up by the referee's assessor. A full squad of sixteen, and the stage set for a perfect afternoon. So why, then, the downcast faces? Why the talk of the Alamo? Of Rorke's Drift and Custer's Last Stand?

One glance at the size of the Accies squad, plus mention of their 2nd XV's match being cancelled and of their BATS connections, and the pessimism was all too real. Not only was there about 400 of them, but 93% (approximately …) were under the age of 20. They were also bolstered by a squadron of Fijian army types, all seemingly called Joe. This was going to be a long afternoon if we weren't careful.

A quick tactical meeting was held in the shadow of the main stand. 'Just give the ball to Marsh', 'Keep it tight' and 'Play dirty' seemed to be the consensus all round. It wasn't going to be enough, though. Coylie then pulled a masterstroke by suggesting two halves of 30 minutes, to which the young (and very good) referee seemed to agree. Though even he warned us they were going to try and spread it out wide. Thanks.

We competed well initially, with both Shaft and Marsh making inroads into the visitors' defence. We came close to scoring a few times early on, with Marsh pushed into touch, Shaft held up and Callum garroted by a Fijian (Joe … probably). The Rodney Army soon found their feet, though, and scored a well worked try through their hooker. Marsh had an interception shortly after, and a full-pitch foot race saw him clipped five metres from the line. That wouldn't have happened on Pitch 5 - it's a damn sight shorter.

Half time saw us still very much in it, and Hamish replaced Yoss whilst Accies sent on the first wave of their replacements. By this time they'd sussed our tactics, and were blitzing Marsh and Shaft in defence and spreading it wide in attack. Jason Parrot was having a fine game for the Rods, marshaling the youngsters around him, and, had it not been for some poor handling, they would have run in a cricket score against us.

As it was, the score was restricted to a further three tries and a conversion. When Callum got castrated in the second half, the Accies even sent on one of their 50 or so subs to play for us. Hamish had the final say, though, and his crushing hit on their young loosehead was the last action of the match. An incident made all the more surreal by the applause that greeted the tackle - and the subsequent protests of 'You can't clap - that's my son that just got tackled!" from the prostrate boy's father.

A very knackered Threes team was glad of the final whistle, and proud to have contained the Rodney legions. After spending a full ten minutes clapping them all off, it was back to the dressing room with the relief of knowing that the result could have been a whole lot worse. And knowing the score to be fine testament to our true grit ... and Accies' bad handling.

As the league concludes for another year, let's raise a glass to more true grit (and bad handling) for next season. Cheers!

  • Melrose Sevens 2006

    Heriots 41 – Stew/Mel – 0

Round One of the Melrose Sevens and Stew/Mel face a Heriots team who had been run close by Langholm in their preliminary match. The Nails boasted a strong side which featured Fijian international Apo Satala. Hail and snow had given way to sunshine, the wind had died down and on a spongy and saturated pitch a lesson in sevens rugby was handed out. It started bad and got steadily worse with Heriots scoring in the first minute through John Houston and going on to add another three tries before the break courtesy of a brace from Marc Teague and one from James Thompson. Colleges sevens coach Davey Hunter responded by replacing Alex Cox and Andy Fraser with Pete McLean and Dave Sutherland respectively for the restart. It was however a Nails substitute, Cammy Bruce, who scored next before adding a second shortly after, both converted. Stew/Mel then began trying to play some rugby and with Borth leading the way and Stu Thom constantly trying to get on the front foot the tide of tries was stemmed. This didn't last long as one of the players of the tournament, Scott Newlands, finished off the scoring for the day for the Nails. To be fair, Herots went on to finish a close second to the Newcastle Falcons in the final but that was scant consolation for the Colleges players and supporters on the day.
