Love rescue me
This morning at Third Day-Bate I would have liked to have spent some time thinking about the U2 song Love rescue me that Martin did a brilliant presentation for. Never got the time so I thought I would write a few lines here. The song is like a Psalm in that it is someone who is looking at his life and seeing what a mess it has been, he's recognised his part in the mess and has moved on to thinking about other things. He knows that he still has work to do to fix his life but needs a bit of help. He knows that the thing that is missing is love. Not a romantic type of love. It is not a song about wanting a girlfriend and thinking that will solve all his problems. He sees no future without love, but love is unreachable. He has worked out the problems he has created, and the ones he has been a victim of, and he realises that the thing that is holding him back is himself. He feels captive to the past, and the only thing that can rescue him is love. He is looking for the freedom that being loved, and being able to love can bring. At one point he paraphrases the 23rd Psalm, "I have cursed thy rod and staff, they no longer rescue me." He's shouting at God, maybe feeling let down by God? Have we felt let down by God? Do we acknowledge it if we do? Or are we afraid to cry out to God that we feel he has abandoned us? Jesus quoted a Psalm (22) on the cross. "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?" David had said these words more than a thousand years earlier when he felt God had abandoned him. We don't always feel God close to us, but in saying "My God, my God, we acknowledge that he is there. That's important. We need to search for God. When we're feeling that God has abandoned us, we need to realise that he is still there, in our lives, loving us. John tells us that God is love, we love because God first loved us. When we feel loved by others we experience something of God, when we realise that we love others, we experience God. Back to the song, it ends with a 'moving on', he has conquered his past and can now see a future, and the future is looking good. He knows he still has work to do, but the future is real. He has experienced love because he has cried out that he wants it. Do you want love? All of us should cry out for it. I pray that today you feel that someone loves you. I pray that today you feel that you love others. If you do, you know God.0 Commentaren 956 dagen
