Advance Warning of Gay Marriage Rally
Hey all,
Just letting you know that on a Saturday within the next few weeks, LGBT Noise, in association with USI LGBT, will be holding a rally for full civil marriage in Daunt Sq in Cork.
We don't know the exact date, as we will be doing this on the Saturday after the release of the heads of the civil union bill.
We need everyone who's interested to turn up to this at 2pm on the day, make some noise, listen to some lovely people speaking and let the Irish govt know that civil unions are NOT equality, and we will NOT accept further marginalisation of our families.
And there'll be sandwiches in Instinct afterward too! What more could you want?
I'll let you know more details as I get them

Say NO to the downgrading of the LGBT Rights Officer!
As some of you might be aware, the LGBT RO position is under review at USI's national congress this year. There are is a motion to downgrade the LGBT RO to a part time chair, and also a motion to downgrade the equality officer as well as the LGBT RO.
As a member of both the LGBT Society and the USI LGBT working group, I am completely against any demotion of the LGBT Rights Officer. Having worked with both a full time and a part time officer, with no offence to Sonya who has done a wonderful job this year with the time she has, it is absolutely imperative to have a full time officer in charge of this campaign.
The LGBT Rights Officer has one of the heaviest workloads of all officers in USI, with its own policy created by its members at Standing Conference every year. That is a whole conference for policy for one position.
The LGBT RO runs effective, active and necessary campaigns, looking for full, equal rights for all LGBT students in this country. It also, very importantly, draws "ordinary" students into its campaigns like no other campaign of USI does.
Pink training, the LGBT campaign's biggest event of the year, is the largest LGBT training weekend in the UK and Ireland, with roughly 200 participants every year.
When equal rights are still being sought for LGBT students, when USI itself is in need of fresh blood and more student involvement, why cut the feet of the most active, most effective, most involved campaign? Why kill the campaign within USI that we can point to as an example of what USI's power is?
The argument being put forward are that USI needs money. Of course it does, but there are more effective ways of saving money than removing the one campaign that is working!
The travesty of allowing CO's blind thirst for structural reform within USI to destroy this campaign cannot be overstated.
If you to find out more about the LGBT campaign, we have produced a booklet on what we do, and why we're needed. Kris has been kind enough to host this on a ucc server:
http://www.ucc.ie/en/SIN/su.ucc.ie/u...
The LGBT campaign is necessary, effective and allows ordinary students from colleges and universities to take part in our national union. Do not let congress destroy that.0 Comments 625 days
