- The SDLP’s vision is a reconciled people living in a united, just and prosperous new Ireland.
As the party of civil rights, the SDLP is working for an Ireland free from poverty, prejudice and injustice; a vibrant country of energy, enterprise and endeavour, where economic prosperity delivers better public services and greater opportunities for all.
The SDLP wants to build an Ireland where conflict, violence and sectarianism become footnotes to our past; where reconciliation, equality and inclusion are chapter headings in the new story we will write together. We will build a better Ireland where we truly cherish all the children of the nation equally.
The SDLP wants this generation and those that will follow to live in an Ireland that stands tall in the world as a champion of global justice, environmental protection & sustainable development; an Ireland that stands out as a beacon of hope for peace, democracy, human rights and respect for diversity. - Our Website

ISSUES OF KEY REGIONAL IMPORTANCE CAN ONLY BE DECIDED IF EXECUTIVE MEET - MARK DURKAN
SDLP Leader and Foyle MP Mark Durkan MLA has said there is a case for the Assembly to reconvene due to the ongoing failure of the Executive to meet.
Mr Durkan said issues of key regional importance such as the devolution of justice and policing and the future of the Maze stadium project can only be decided through collective meeting of the Executive.
“We have not had an Executive meeting since June and are unlikely to see one until mid-September.
“In circumstances where the Executive was failing to meet, where meetings were being cancelled, and where the business of Executive was silting up there could be a case for the Assembly reconvening.
“When the Assembly went into recess it did so with the expectation that the Executive would continue to meet to deal with the serious issues that are putting pressures of on families, businesses and the budgets of public services.
“Despite what Sinn Fein and the DUP would have us believe in relation to the devolution of justice and policing and Maze stadium, business is not being done at Executive level.
“In the build up to the talks at Leeds Castle and St Andrews the DUP were the ones saying that decisions could only be taken as a collective Executive not by ministers on solo runs or on a deal making or trade off basis by the DUP and Sinn Fein.
“Issues of key regional importance can only be decided if the Executive actually meets.
“The purpose of reconvening the Assembly would be to question and challenge why the Executive was not meeting. Assembly members are elected to hold the Executive to account. We must set out clearly why the Executive needs to meet and we will also put forward constructive ideas on what the Executive can do to help.
“During this period of inactivity, people have been feeling the effects of an economic crunch which has become a consumer and income crunch.
“This is taking its toll on companies and small businesses in all our constituencies.
“Rising energy costs are driving costs of living and we are reaching levels of difficulties where householders are struggling to heat their homes and run their cars and pay for food.
“There are budget implications for departments and services arising directly and indirectly from these cost increases.
“I have posed the question before and will do so again – is the Executive’s best way of meeting this crisis not to meet?
“Is this the best devolution can deliver? People are understandably coming to the conclusion that the Executive is approaching an ostrich approach. But sticking heads in the sand won’t change the reality of the problems facing our voters.”

Northern Ireland still remains a divided society. Mistrust and misconceptions are among the biggest threats to a better future. Many children still reach adulthood having had little contact with people from the other side of the religious divide.
Where better to start than with educating children together?

REMEMBERING THE VICTIMS & SURVIVORS OF THE OMAGH BOMB
10 YEARS ON
SDLP Leader Mark Durkan 'The Omagh bomb was a dreadful atrocity which epitomised the brutality and futility of all terrorism.
Today we remember the horror and the hurt, and honour the memory of all those who were robbed of their lives and their loves on that day.'
<<<<<<<<< Check out our video box from You tube - Juliet Turner sang this song for the victims and their families after the Omagh bomb in 1998
Thanks for the add, look forward to working with the party on LGBT issues.

Hey Ed. Youth Conference is on 5th July in Belfast. You are definitely invited - as are other Greens (letters should've been sent). Should be a great weekend. Hope you can make it.
I'm in the top 16? I'm honoured.
What's the story with convention, are guests invited?...
In Australia the new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd gave a brave and humbling apology spoken on behalf of the now Australian people to the The Aborigines the 'Real Australians', it was an in depth speech which stated many cases of mistreatment by the state on the natives.
We as Irish people North & South deserve nothing less, over a thousand years during famines 'Great Hunger', rapes and discrimination, collusion, theft of land and murder, should we expect anything less?
the IRA apologized for any wrong doings Yet those culprit's seem to get off lightly, should we not press for an Official State apology and maybe get Kevin Rudd involved or his backing as he seems to be a man with a lot of integrity? I doubt they will ever apologize but for all those people who laid there lives for our country at least we should try to push it.
