- The Wakes are a GlasgowIrishFolk'nRoll bunch of Hooligans and Outlaws. We might all be Jock Tamson's Bairns but our mother is Roisin Dubh.
Fionn MacCuhill size strides have been made in the last year with a debut album entitled, "These Hands," regular gigs in Scotland and Ireland as well as trips to Spain and Germany. The boys have also performed as part of "Celtic Underground" at the Arches as well as supporting acts such as The Men They Couldn't Hang and The UK Subs among others.
The past year has also seen the debut of "The Big Hooley", a massive step for the Folk/Rock scene within the city and featuring fantastic bands from Glasgow and beyond. November sees what promises to be the Biggest Hooley yet as well as the possible arrival of a Wakes track in the German charts. (Watch this space)
At the moment, the boys are recording their second album.

The Wakes…Irish Folk Band…New Album Review !!!!!!!
Scotlands Greatest Irish Folk Band..The Wakes have just released their long awaited album for public sale following a launch night gig on Sunday 27th September in Maggie Mays on Glasgow’s Trongate.
The album which I have now listened to continually whilst driving( just about 400 miles)over the last few days is a quite brilliant collection of 11 songs with 8 of them being The Wakes own original material with indeed one of those being their previously released single “The Uncrowned King Of Football” which is the bands very own tribute to Celtic’s Greatest Ever Player Jimmy Johnstone.
The album infact encapsulates everything that makes The Wakes the top Irish Folk Band they are with the songs telling stories of how the Irish people unselfishly took part in various “Rebellions” not only in their homeland but also all around the world. It does this with The Wakes very own brand of “Sadness, Humour, Socialism & Anarchy” and is a must listen to for all “Real Rebels” in life not just those of the “oh-ah brigade”
Lead singer & guitarist Paul’s superb vocal talents(including one song sung in Italian) are backed by the fantastic musical talents of the rest of the band members, Chris, Christopher, Eamon & James, whose collective sound makes The Wakes as I have stated right at the start of this article ”Scotlands Greatest Irish Folk Band” bar none !!!!!!!!
The “No Irish Need Apply” album is now available from the band at www.thewakes-band.co.uk or indeed if you have any problems contacting the band then you can get in touch with me here or at phil57@celticfanzone.net.

These Hands
Hi folks,
Quite a few people had asked me for the lyrics to this song following Cinderella Story lyrics being put up.
The song tells the story of Glasgow man Jimmy Maley, who left his home in the Calton to fight against Fascism in Spain. The day after we recorded it we read in the paper that James had passed away. It was written when Jimmy was still very much alive and I was extremely saddened at the news of his death. We became very good friends with his son Willie and I was pleasantly surprised when I was told that the song had been sung at the Scottish Parliament by none other than Scottish folk singer Arthur Johnstone, who was a singer with the band The Laggan in the 1970s.
But anyway, here is the song.
I take a look at you old man,
as you sit in your chair
You can be almost anyone
For all I know or I care
But on your chest is a red star
From the days long gone by
of a proud fighting past
For a cause you held high
Son we set out from Glasgow
To the war torn Spain
Brave socialist fighters
from a Scottish Brigade
Not knowing our fate
or what would befall
But for Justice and freedom
were prepared to give all
(Chorus)
And these hands fought the Fascists
at Jarama in Spain
My heart beats for justice
until my dying day
I never set out for glory
but I'd my part to play
In the fight against Franco
at Jarama in Spain
For five long weeks we waited
to be handed a gun
They drove us into the fighting under Spain's blazing sun
And the fires of hell don't compare
to the battle that day
In the heat of Jarama
Seven thousand were slain
But we ran out of bullets
taken by Franco's men
To Tavelerna de la Reina
and then moved on again
The Calton had never
seemed so far away
as I lay in that prison in Salamanca in Spain
(Chorus)
So take a look at me now son
and the star on my chest
Some of us gave up everything
For the cause of the left
The deeds that we've done
and the part that we played
in the fight against Franco
at Jarama in Spain
Thank you for your kind words regarding the song and it is a real honour to be asked to play the song at gigs.
Thanks again

Cinderella Story Lyrics
Quite a few folk have been lookin for the lyrics to Cinderella Story, so without further adieu here they are.
Countless ships of heads and faces steamin up the Broomilaw
as into Greenock and Port Glasgow the starving Irish shoal ahore.
No pledge to shelter our huddled masses, no lady lies waiting in the bay
and hunger is a great force in keeping down wages but we're hungry enough to take any pay
Factory workers, potato pickers, down the pit or on your way
no sanitation, worse ventilation, twenty-one to a room and a fifteen hour day
We bring skill and we bring vision, we bring ambition and tradition as well,
we cant change our past but we'll help shape the future and the Irish will rise from our poverty hell
There's tension rising in the shipyards to drive us back across the sea
and riots in the town of Greenock only fuel the flames of their bigotry.
But the Irish changed our situation like a phoenix rising from the flames. From desperation there came celebration.
Glasgow Celtic, was the name.
Another Cinderella story, a fairytale that must be heard
Another song of rags to ritches
A brave new start in a brand new world.5 Comments 140 days
