About Me

Me, Myself, and I
I am an SNP MSP for the South of Scotland and the youngest MSP in the Parliament

Originally from Perthshire, I grew up on my parents’ tenant farm. In 1998 I moved to the West Coast to study Politics and History at the University of Glasgow.

I am currently national convener of the SNP youth wing, the Young Scots for Independence. Since graduating, I have worked as editor of construction magazine Keystone’ and was editorial assistant on the pro-independence newspaper, the Scottish Standard.

I have also worked for Nicola Sturgeon and currently work as a researcher for Shona Robison MSP and Stewart Hosie MP.

  • More poll dancing… 28th February 2007

Another week and another poll and still the SNP are riding high! The poll, this time published by the Scotsman, has the SNP leading Labour by 5% on the constituency vote. Yet still, PM Tony Bliar (sic) reckons his Labour party are winning in the battle of ideas.

I wonder what ideas these are. Perhaps he’s referring to the wee bitty I saw on Newsnight Scotland showing Andy Kerr and Cathy Jamieson beside Labour’s new poster campaign which says: ‘Hello SNP…Goodbye new Schools/Hospitals’.

Is this supposed to be Labour’s trump card in the ideas game? It seems to me that they are only rehashing their tired old scare tactics that in the past has included wee gems like; the SNP will eat your first born!

I am literally none the wiser as to what Labour’s ideas actually are. Is Tony referring to the new ‘idea’ of replacing Trident at a cost of £75bn or maybe he’s talking about Labour’s love affair with the discredited PFI system seeing hospitals and schools run for private profit.

Whatever Big Tone’s going on aboot, it’s clear that Labour’s ideas are not resonating with the respondents to the Scotsman’s ICM poll. It’s even more clear that Labour’s poster would be more accurate if it read: ‘Hello SNP…Hello self-respect, self governance, a place on the global arena, more schools, more hospitals, more police, more jobs, more prosperity...’

  • Why does it always rain on me??? - 27th February 2007

Another nicht for the wellies on Tuesday. Out and about in Forth saw election agent Euan, council candidate George and me looking like drowned rats! I must’ve looked a right sight in my bright orange kagool, wet shoes and windswept hair! However, undeterred by such scariness on a Tuesday night – the good people of Forth overwhelmingly seemed to support not only the SNP but independence. This is excellent news so close to the election. February

  • AGMs- 26th February 2007

The branches across the constituency have now all held their AGMs and have elected their new teams ready for action. I had the pleasure of attendin them all and have never been so well fed in my life! I’ve had clootie dumpling, quiche, pieces and cakes – the diet has been well and truly flung oot the windae!

Hello! Your bebo pages managed to make it into the Sunday Times this week.....
Just joined the party the other week there so thought I might shout you up for some ideas. Our local party has all of zero young members (excluding myself) so I thought you might have some ways of getting people involved?
Oh i'm Andrew btw. Well done on the election and all that :)
