So here I finally am...in the sprawling metropolis that is Fort McMurray, hoping to make my millions just like every other person in town.
After a season in Fernie, I headed to Vancouver, spent a bit of time on Vancouver Island, then went on a roadtrip to Seattle and along the top part of Washington and Idaho and then back up to Canada through Cranbrook, BC, all the up to Banff, Alberta, and then on to Edmonton before the final leg...as far North as we'd dare...to Fort McMurray
I've added a bunch of photo's of the trip, which is probably the last time for quite a while that I'll be uploading photo's as unfortunately Fort Mac is not the most scenic of locations. However, there's about 1 500 photo's in total in my gallery by now, so I'm sure there'll be plenty to amuse you.
Always love hearing what my friends around the world are getting up to, so please don't be shy...send me a message or email.

19 August - Sunday
Well the evil Facebook has me firmly in it's grip and I've been snobbing Bebo a bit, I have to admit
Shame on me! Here's a quick update.
Still driving the Haul Trucks for Cross Contracting and just trying to save as much money as I can. Hoping to go to London 7-17 November, then head to South Africa for a while to see my family.
Had my funnest night out in Fort McMurray (or Fort McMoney or Fort McNewfie...whichever you prefer!) ever last night. Went out with 2 South African girls and just had a blast. We were speaking in Afrikaans all night and it was such a treat to chat away in my mother tongue again. We were talking about funny afrikaans words and a couple of times I laughed so hard that tears were streaming down my cheeks and I was kicking myself for not wearing water proof mascara!
My grandma has just been diagnosed with Leukemia (after recovering from a stroke and just generally being in ill health...she's 90 after all the poor thing!). I'm desperately afraid she won't hang in there until I get back. Wish I could hop on a plane tomorrow and be there with her. It's one of the things that makes it really hard being so far away from your family.
On a happier note, my second Canadian working holiday visa came through today. I couldn't believe it! It only took 2 weeks...I wasn't expecting it until early September. I'll activate this visa when I get back from South Africa, so it will be valid for a year from that date, which is just great. Should hopefully give me plenty of time to get my residency application sorted. I can definitely see myself living in Canada for a few more years...think I'd like to study here end of next year...but who knows right? That's become my motto lately! Seems the more I try to plan things, the less control I have of what end up happening! Maybe that's for the best.
I'm afraid life here really is pretty boring...we've had a couple of zero degree mornings (though it did warm up to the early 20's later in the day). It's a chilly reminder that winter's never far away in this country.
Oh, I did go to the golf driving range on Friday with 2 of the guys I used to work with. That was hilarious seeing as I've never actually even held a gold club in my hands before (put put doesnt' count!). Lots of fun and the greens were just stunning. I had no idea that had a place this beautiful in Fort McMurray. I just couldn't believe it. As we were driving, this little fox came right up to us...then strutted along past the other golfers looking for a bite to eat and then went off on its merry littly way. Bit disappointed I still haven't seen a moose yet, but at least I got to see my second bear a couple of weeks ago when Chris and I were driving back from Edmonton. That was quite a treat. Saw a little white tailed deer too.
Ok that's it for now folks. Lots of love! Eug x

31 July Tuesday
Grrr...I'm not a very happy chappy today. Just got back from a wonderful weekend in Edmonton with Chris, to find out that Cross doesn't have any work for me Mon and Tues. They better bloody well have some work for me tomorrow or some heads will be rolling. I understand that's the nature of contract work, but bloody hell, I've only just started...the least they can do is give me some hours so I can get some experience before they tell me to stay home. Then again, last night I dreamt a rolled a truck, so maybe it's just as well I'm at home today
So...trip to Edmonton. We left at 4:32pm on Friday, a whole 2 minutes after Chris finished work. That's definitely the first time I've actually left on time for a road trip
We got to our hotel about 9pm, dropped our bags off (mmm....king size bed!) and headed to Sam Wok for some pretty authentic Chinese food. Really delicious and ridiculously cheap. Then back to the hotel for a well deserved snooze.
Saturday we headed to West Edmonton Mall (supposedly the biggest mall in the world?) and did some shopping. I found a wonderful undie shop and bought some little treats ($360 later! ouch! And that was just 2 bra's and a pantie! haha! too much information, I know!). I made up for my undie splurge by getting 2 boob tubes and 3 halter neck tops for under $120 in about 30 minutes flat from a funkie little store.
Then it was time for dinner at Tony Roma's, followed by the Simpson's movie which was just hilarious! What wasn't so hilarious was waiting in line for 25 minutes to get a coke! Gotta love Alberta's service industry
Hit the road on Sunday and I was totally stoked to see another little bear (about the same size as the one I saw in Vancouver Island). Soooo cute!!! Still haven't seen a moose though.
To add to my frustration the last 2 days, I haven't been able to log into my Orcon email for 5 days and can't log into MSN either....but everything else works fine. Oh, and Facebook is doing an upgrade at the moment so can't log into that...and it's not like I have any friends in town to go hang out with...so needless to say I'm feeling a bit depressed and bored at th moment. Think I'll go for a run to get some endorphins flowing through my bod...things might look a bit brighter then.

July 21 - a month later...
Well I've been in Fort McMurray almost 3 months and just started my 3rd job on Monday. The guy I was steaming for was a bit dodgy with the pay and I didn't want to get into trouble...especially seeing as I'm going to apply for Canadian residency. So...Last week I started the job hunt all over again. Tuesday morning I went for an interview at Golosky Trucking Company and also faxed my resume to Cross Contracting. Tuesday afternoon Golosky called me and offered me the job...and an hour later Cross called me offering me heaps more money and better shifts...without ever having met me and without me having any experience driving Haul Trucks. Oh the beauty of living in Fort McMurray.....siiigghh...
Wednesday morning I called the guy from Golosky to let him know I won't be taking the job...and Wednesday afternoon he called me up and invited me to dinner on Friday. Definitely the nicest guy I've met in a long long loooooooooong time...but I'll be leaving it at that
So Mon, Tues and Wed this week I was in training...Thursday we were on lightning alert for most of the day, so I only got to do one load all by myself. And not just any load...we had to back up a ramp only slightly wider than the truck, with the main slurry pipe on one side and a drop on the other side. Oh, did I mention we had to back up around a bend too?!!!! I had so much adrenalin in my system it was unreal. Was pretty stoked with myself when it was all said and done though.
Friday we turned up to work and everything was under water thanks to the storm the night before, so we got sent home unfortunately (still get paid for 3 hours). Oh, I should mention that this is a union job, so they pay us ridiculous amounts of money, time and a half after 8 hours a day (we work 11.5 hrs a day) and time and a half on the weekends!!! I still can't believe my luck!!!
I like to think I deserve it though.
Today is Saturday and unfortunately everything is still soaked, so we got sent home again which really sucks, especially seeing as it's a time and half day, and next weekend we have off (because of our 11 on, 3 off shift). Next weekend Chris and I are going to Edmonton for a bit of shopping. It'll be the first time I've been outside Fort Mac in the 3 months I've been here, so I'm really looking forward to it.
So hopefully I'll be pretty well off after working here for a few months...if we ever get to work that is!!! Yes, I'm just slightly sour
Should get my 2nd working holiday visa in about a month, so I'm stoked!!! Umm...really haven't been up to much else here. Went rollerblading the other day and ended up with huge blisters on the arches of my feet.
Oh what an exciting life I lead...it's so much like Fernie....NOOOOTTT
