Kissing and cuddling has been banned at a village school Last Friday a girl was sent home from Harrold Middle School after a fellow pupil hugged her following a reprimand by the school's headmaster.

It is believed that a parent had complained to the school about closeness between pupils through sharing hugs with one another.

The school, which takes pupils from nine to 13, believes it was more serious than that, with pupils kissing and sending explicit text messages.

A special assembly was called where all pupils were told that they faced disciplinary action if they were found to be hugging anywhere on school property.

The teenager was sent to the headmaster, Keith Atkins, when a teacher saw her hugging a friend.

The girl was left upset after her meeting and ran out of the office in tears to be consoled by friends, one of whom gave her a comforting embrace.

This was spotted by another teacher and the girl was sent home.

A parent whose daughter witnessed the incident said: "It is absolutely ridiculous for someone to be sent home for a hug. I could understand if they were hitting each other, but it's an act that friends do every day.

"My daughter has been told that the girl may not return to the school and her place at Sharnbrook Upper could be in doubt because of this disciplinary matter.

"We try so hard to make sure our kids are kind and courteous only to have this thrown at them."

Keith Atkins, head teacher of Harrold Priory Middle School, said: "The pupil in question has not been suspended and her mother fully supported the warning I gave her daughter, which was not for hugging another pupil.

"A parent did complain that her son had exchanged explicit text messages with another pupil and was seen kissing and cuddling that pupil on the school field. In assembly I told our pupils that this was not the sort of behaviour I wanted to see on the field, particularly when you consider there are some very young pupils at our school.

"This is a reasonable request to make but unfortunately some of our older pupils did not agree and decided to make their feelings known.

The girl in question was repeatedly asked to tone down her behaviour but continued to disobey my instructions and has now been warned about her conduct."
