On Friday 27th June 2008 in The Vaults, GET:music will be presenting one of the most pioneering figures ever to set foot into the world of electronic dance music, Robert Babicz. A master of innovation and reinvention, Robert has managed to evolve through a myriad of mutations and as a result, remain at the forefront of cutting-edge electronic music for nearly 20 years. Throughout his career, Robert has continuously pushed the boundaries of electronic dance music to new levels, in both production and live performance. A career spanning nearly 20 years, Robert Babicz is a name that is engraved into the history of electronic dance music.
Right after the phenomenon of Chicago and deep house, techno began to establish itself as a brand new and totally original part of youth culture. In 1989, the year the wall came down, Berlin witnessed the first big techno happenings like Love Parade and Teknozid. But Cologne also saw many new clubs like the Space club or the Sweatbox. Pioneers of these days were Reinhard and Wolfgang Voigt (now running the Kompakt empire), The Modernist, Mate Galic, Roland Casper and Rob Acid (aka Robert Babicz). Robert’s first release “Happy answer” became an unexpectedly big hit. Especially in the UK, on the label London Records the track storms the charts at the same time as M.A.R.R.S. “Pump up the volume” and “Theme from s- express”. More and more acid house influenced records come out and soon they dominate club culture.
At the end of the 90s Robert withdrew somewhat in order to reflect and to reinvent himself. He began to produce records as Atlon Inc and Dicabor, with an identity completely opposite to that of Rob Acid productions. The quality and the sound standard of these ambient projects become more and more important in his work and improved immensely as Robert began to master new equipment and techniques. In 2001, Robert, together with Marc Romboy and Klaus Derichs, created a new platform called Shortcut Recordings dedicated to Robert’s club tracks. After a period of calm and relaxed tracks it was now time to pump up the volume and raise the BPMs again. His productions become very techno influenced at this stage, moving away from his acid house influences. After the collaboration between Robert and Marc Romboy on the label Le Petit Prince, Romboy went on to create Systematic Recordings in the summer of 2004 and asked Robert to remix his first single with the Detroit legend Blake Baxter and also to do a new version for Berlin’s house impresario Phonique. With his remixes and his own productions beginning to cause a stir within the scene, Robert went on to release singles on high profiled imprints like Kompakt, Treibstoff and Steve Bug’s Audiomatique. More success followed with tracks like”Sin” and his remix of Gui Boratto’s “Decay”, and in 2007, Robert went on to produce his debut artist album. “A Cheerful Temper” went on to receive plaudits from every angle of the electronic music world, being hailed by many as one of the finest electronic albums of the last few years.
Those who are following Robert’s career over the years know that his sound and the standard of his productions reach almost audiophile standards. No surprise then that many well known artists like Gabriel Ananda, Minilogue and Martinez request his special abilities for mastering their productions. One reason for his famous sound stems in part from his collection of old analogue equipment (even from the 60s and 70s) which Robert uses alongside his computer. Besides drum machines like the famous Roland TR808 and TR909, Robert owns a variety of unique machines like special effects and EQs the size of living rooms, some taken from German TV stations to edit their movies and crime shows. He even uses equalizers used by the secret service and compressors used by East German radio stations. It is no wonder then that the sound quality of his album and his productions are both graceful and crystal

Guy J is a 22 year old hailing from Tel Aviv in Israel. Together with fellow countrymen such as Guy Gerber, Chaim and Shlomi Aber, Guy J has been instrumental in transforming Israel into one of the most exciting countries in the world of electronic dance music in recent years. DJing since the age of 15 and producing since he was 18, his rapid rise to the forefront of electronic music has been put down to a mature and polished sound that defies his young age.
Combining the warmth of progressive house with elements of tech house, techno and minimal, Guy J’s broad musical style saw him become an instant favourite of many of the world’s top DJs, non more so than the legendary John Digweed, who immeadiately signed Guy to his infamous Bedrock label. On top of the Bedrock releases, tracks on other massively respected label’s such as Tiga’s Turbo Recordings, the classic sounds of Renaissance, one of the world’s largest house labels in Azuli and Germany’s techno-monster Traum, have all seen Guy’s popularity soar. With some of his biggest fans including Sasha, Hernan Cattaneo, Satoshi Tomiie, Gregor Tresher amongst others, one would be forgiven for thinking that it has taken this Israeli years of fine-tuning to reach this level. But, as he’s live performances also prove, Guy J is a natural talent who is fulfilling his potential in front of a worldwide audience.
Despite numerous highly-acclaimed releases, stunning Ableton Live performances and also tracks appearing on John Digweed’s “Transitions Vol 3”, Hernan Cattaneo’s “Sequential 2” and Dave Seaman’s “Therapy Sessions 4” amongst others, Guy J is not one to rest on his laurels and 2008 is lined up to be his biggest year yet. With some fantastic releases due out on Bedrock, Turbo Records and Azuli to name but a few, 2008 is also the year when Guy will begin to take his live sound to a global audience with gigs scheduled throughout Asia, Australia and Europe over the coming months. Also over the last few weeks, John Digweed has emphasised his love for Guy's music and talent by making him a headlining act in the Bedrock tent at this summer's Global Gathering and has also included 2 of Guy's upcoming releases in his new "Transitions Vol 4" mix CD.
Guy J’s rich, mature sound is set to be a fixture in electronic dance music for years to come and GET:music are delighted to be bringing this extremely talented performer and producer to Ireland for the very first time. Don’t miss your chance to see him in action at Radio City on Friday 4th April.
