  • Gold Expedition Summer 2009

Dear award holders and award friends,

as summer 2009 draws ever closer, many of you will be casting your eyes perhaps overseas following completion of your gold award or perhaps you know (or are) someone who still has to complete their expedition section? Either way, we in Tar Eis Oir are planning an expedition this summer that might just suit you!

    Who?
This summers expedition will take place in conjunction with our counterparts in the Czech Youth Award - EDIE, and will take place across two countries, the Czech Republic and Romania and is aimed at award participants who are completing their Gold Award. Gold Award Holders are more than welcome to apply but should be award that in the event of shortage of places, priority will be given to award participants. We anticipate that a team of between 6-8 participants and 2 award leaders will be taking part from Ireland.

    What and Why?
During the course of the trip, participants will in conjunction with their Czech counterparts, will explore part the Banat region of Romania. This is interesting area that consists of many nationalities and ethnic groups that were cut cut off from their respective countries when the great powers drew up the new borders of Europe after World War I. Participants will not only spend time with their counterparts from the Czech republic on the expedition, but will also get the chance to interact with locals at activities that have been arranged and get the chance to find out about what local life in this remote part of central Europe is like. The expedition itself will be pitched Gold Award level, thus over the course of four days participants will cover some 97km on foot over varying terrain and spend time camping and cooking their own food. As such this will present challenges of many nature's as participants will be carrying their own equipment and be living in close proximity with each other in tents for the duration of the trip, so it is essential that we meet together before our departure so the group can get to know each other and receive any training necessary (depending on the experience of the group)for the event.

    When?
The dates we have proposed are from the 23rd of June to the 1st of July, but there will be the option to arrive earlier or latter depending on if you would like to explore a bit more of Prague and the Czech republic. As things stand is, we plan is to fly into Prague on the 23rd of June, to meet with our Czech counterparts beforehand and then proceed to Romania with them on the 24th. We will be "on the road" between the 24th and 29th of June, at which stage we will return to Prague and return to Ireland on or around the 1st of July.

    Cost
As of today, with Ryanair and Aerlingus on those dates are currently around €50-60 each way inclusive of taxes and charges ( but excluding travel insurance and baggage costs. There will a cost of approximately €100 to participate in the Czech expedition (which includes transport to and from Romania and two meals a day whilst we are there) and the cost of staying in Prague before and after the expedition and any activities the group wishes to take part in. Therefore we would suggest that participants should budget some €350 or so for this trip inclusive of flights (please remember the earlier flights are booked the cheaper they are), expedition fee, and estimated cost of accommodation (based on booking accommodation in Prague at the earliest possible opportunity) as well as other costs like food, socialising etc.

    What do I need?
A basic level of fitness is of course required, but there is plenty of time between now and the event to get training. Perhaps most importantly you need to bring a sense of humour, a willingness to learn and work as a team and above all the enthusiasm to meet and overcome whatever challenges confront you, before, during and after the expedition.

    The next steps?
Anyone interested in participating in this years Gold Expedition should request an ap

Im taking up the Gaisce after my leaving, but i wanted to know can I go straight for the Gold. I've been told both yes and no. In the case of no, i was told i need a bronze and silver. the gold seems like a few weekends out to me tbh. voluntary work. bit of a cycle, camping trip. theres nothing impossible. in saying that, i have great respect for those who do get a Gaisce award. It takes self-motivation and determination, and of course a bit of sacrifice (using up some of your free time).

Hi, I was wondering if you knew of any clubs in the Dublin area that are involved in the Gaisce award? I'm studying in Trinity and they don't seem to have one and I'd rather not do it on my own....

    Hi all,
At the moment I am in the middle of completing my gold Gaisce award. I am almost finished my personal skill with less than ten weeks left. My community avtivity is somewhat harder to complete as it is taking a bit longer but I am going steady at it. I havent started my sport at the moment due to lack of time. At the moment I am in college and involved in 2 things for the gaisce. I am hoping to start my sport when I am finished my skill. I am hoping to do my adventure during the summer and then to get my award in 2010. So here is hoping. It is nice to find a group on bebo for the gaisce. There are others out there who understand what we are doing. Melissa, Offaly
