  • An E-mail of memories of President Jack (Emotional)

    My Sister and I have known Jack Asher since the 1950s when he used to
    visit
    our home in Knightswood following shinty matches held at Garscadden
    Playing
    Fields. Jack and several other shinty players used to visit us
    frequently
    for tea and homemade scones - reliving the game that day. A few of the
    boys
    were from the North and living in "digs" in Glasgow so they enjoyed
    their
    evenings at Commore Drive. As well as scones, they visited because our

    Father was Duncan Ferguson, for many years Goalkeeper for Glasgow
    Inverness
    and Secretary of the Southern Shinty League and several other
    committees.
    Sadie and Duncan were very fond of all the young players who visited
    us. I
    particularly remember Jack for his very dramatic and explicit display
    of the
    excitement of the game of shinty over a cup of tea. The milk, sugar,
    plate
    of scones and biscuits were frequently spread out on the table
    re-enacting a
    particular match.
    We now live in Kames, Tighnabruaich, and quite often see Jack when he
    comes
    to games. I have the Kames Kabin just 100 yards from the Playing
    Fields.
    Sadly our Father died in 1979 but Mum (Sadie) is 90 and lives in
    Abbeyfield
    House, Kames, so we all live very close to each other.
    We were absolutely delighted to read about Jack's Testimonial Match in
    February. He was and still is an inspiration to all up and coming
    shinty
    players with his vast knowledge and experience over the last 60 years,
    and
    also for his wonderful "youthful" personality.
    Jack aned Liz are still o n our Christmas list even though our meetings
    are
    limited.

    Well done Jack for all the good work you have done for shinty. Joyce
    and I
    are very glad and proud to have known you since we were children.
