Giant Panda
Meet Xing Xing, Pyong Pyong, Chou Chou, Chow Chow, Ding Ding, Shweh Shweh and Ya Ya. Pandas are excellent climbers and their staple diet consists of bamboo and occasionally small animals. They usually give birth to one or two cubs and gestation period is three months.
Red Panda
The Red Panda once flourished across seven provinces in China and is now extinct in all but three. There is at present, a young family in our care.
Golden Takin
The gentle giant. Another species indigenous to China. Has a rough and clumsy appearance and is a distant relative of the domestic sheep.
Golden Monkey
Groups of golden monkeys can number between 10 and over 100. Life span of about 18 years. Grade-1 national protected animal.
Crested Ibis
There are over 200 Crested Ibis at our centre. Did you know, the Crested Ibis disappeared from the wild in the 1970s due to the destruction of its natural habitat. They were rediscovered in 1981 in only one Chinese province.
Vulture
Did you know that the vultures long neck is especially adapted for stretching into the abdominal cavity of large carcasses? It lives on plateaus and mountainous areas at about 4, 500 metres.
White-Lipped Deer
Did you know that White-Lipped Deer travel in sex-segregated herds? Young males move with male herds and females stay in the herd in which they were raised and travel with their mother.

  • Working with Pandas

There are 8 pandas at the Shaanxi Rare Wild Animals Rescue and Research Centre.

Volunteers get their first sight of them on Monday 8am, doing what they do best - eating bamboo !

Work starts at 8.00am with a thorough clean-out of the enclosures. This involves collecting all the old bamboo and mucking out. The enclosures are swept spotlessly clean and new bamboo and fresh water is given to the panda's. Every week, the enclosures are thoroughly scrubbed and disinfected.

At 10.30 Pandas are fed with "panda cakes" (mostly bamboo with added nutrients) apples and specially-prepared milk.

The second clean-out is at 2.00pm when fresh bamboo is supplied and a second feed at 4.30pm.

This is a typical working day however volunteers can busy themselves with other activities such as clearing undergrowth and cutting back grass in the overgrown enclosures.

The pandas have an indoor enclosure where they seem to be happy spending their time eating (which they can do for up to 12 hours a day !) The younger ones definitely like to romp around outside as we found out when we moved a three-year old panda (Ya-Ya) into a very spacious outside enclosure.

The keepers and Vets administer excellent care to their animals. Their health and diet is carefully monitored everyday and the keepers ensure that only good fresh bamboo and apples are given to them.

  • Louguantai

The Panda Centre is located in the village of Louguantai which is known in China as the most important places in the advent of Daoism.

It is set in the foothills of the Qingling mountains where some wild pandas still roam but sightings are extremely rare. Whilst it receives some Chinese visitors, not many people here can speak English and very few signs are in English however a typical heartfelt Chinese welcome is extended to all and sundry.

The food in Louguantai is fantastic - mostly thanks to a small unpretentious restaurant run by Mr Dong and his wife. He has produced the only English menu in Louguantai and can supplied vast quantities of great food in minutes!

The pandas were great to see but help is needed with the place, things are looking old and in need of repair. :( :(
A thrilling experience but sad at the same time, wish I could do something :)
