Winning applications were judged based on engagement (time spent and percentage of returning users), usability, and visual appeal, and were selected from among 2,000 entries in a variety of categories, including casual games, virtual reality, communication and entertainment. The contest was open to all new applications uploaded to Bebo beginning November 11, 2008 through January 5, 2009.
"In the four months since Bebo launched new engagement metrics and developer tools, we have seen a really positive increase in engagement, which ultimately means that our users are enjoying and coming back to the new applications now available on Bebo," said Jessica Alter, Director of Business Development and Platform for Bebo. "We're committed to finding and rewarding engaging applications, and the B.E.S.T contest winners have demonstrated the ability to quickly and successfully establish a mutually beneficial relationship with the Bebo community."
Bebo's Open Application Platform allows third party developers to integrate their applications directly with the Bebo site. The platform has nearly 17,500 applications in gaming, communications, virtual worlds, music and entertainment. Bebo's engagement metrics and reporting analyze time spent, percentage of returning users, and time spent/total installs of applications. All applications are given a dynamic 1-10 ranking, and those that consistently hold the highest ranking are rewarded with increased access to viral channels and visibility, and opportunity to test Beta features.
