- Katy Perry and Kings of Leon are honoured
- Mark Ronson collects Coolest DJ title
London, 31st December 2008: Cheryl Cole has been crowned the Coolest Female celebrity of 2008 in the first ever Bebo Cool Awards. The X-Factor judge and pop starlet topped the coveted run-down, beating Harry Potter actress Emma Watson and Paris Hilton to the top honour.
More than 20,000 teenagers voted for the most cutting edge celebrities, bands, DJ's and brands of 2008 on social media network site Bebo. High School Musical star Zac Effron picked up the prestigious title of Coolest Male celebrity, beating off stiff competition from Joe Jonas and Justin Timberlake.
I Kissed a Girl singer Katy Perry has sealed the end of a great year by winning the Coolest Solo Artist Award beating worthy competitors including Leona Lewis and Chris Brown.
The inaugural Bebo Cool Award for Best Band was won by Kings of Leon who beat off stiff competition from X Factor runners-up JLS and The Killers.
Bebo's Cool Awards have also honoured DJ's which teens rate as their favourites. Sibling spinners Samantha and Mark Ronson went head to head in this category but Mark put his sister to shame by securing the majority of votes. It meant he also stole the title from Bob Sinclair and Radio 1's Annie Mac.
Sarah Gavin Global Director of Communications Bebo, says: "It's great to see so many of our users voting in the first ever Bebo Cool Awards. As you'd expect there are quite a few surprises about whom they rate and don't rate on the celebrity barometer. But the level of voting also reflects how important entertainment and popular culture is to today's generation".
The late Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight has also gone down well with the Bebo community, which voted the latest Batman adventure Coolest Film. That's despite being up against other big screen blockbusters such as the Abba feel-good flick Mamma Mia! and the animated comedy Kung Fu Panda.
When it comes to TV viewing, it's a close run thing in the popularity stakes between Eastenders and edgy teen drama Skins. But the antics of Albert Square have made it the top choice for Coolest TV Show, beating Gavin and Stacey and Hollyoaks.
As the most popular way for most teenagers to listen to music, it's no surprise that the iPod has won the Coolest Gadget title, beating Nintendo's Wii and the Xbox 360. Apple has also secured the top spot in the battle for the brands. It collected the Coolest Brand title by fending off competition from Nike, Coca-Cola, Sony and Nokia.
Budget conscious Bebo users have also rated Primark the Coolest High Street store ahead of Top Shop and River Island.
