London, UK - Bebo and EQAL today announced that the forthcoming second series finale of the award-winning online drama KateModern will be its last.
The twice BAFTA-nominated show will reach a climactic finale on Saturday28th June as planned, and whilst producers will leave the doors open for a return at some point, this will be the final show for the foreseeable future.
Produced by EQAL (formerly known as LG15 Studios) and broadcast across social media network Bebo, KateModern has averaged (up to) 1.2 million views per week of its bite-size four minute episodes, creating a new genre, encouraging unprecedented interactivity with its audience and paving the way for a crop of new show launches.
In April, it received the Innovation Award from the Broadcasting Press Guild, who described the show as 'redefining television drama for the broadband age', and it is nominated in both Interactive Innovation categories at the forthcoming BAFTA Craft Awards on Sunday 11th March as well as for Best Drama Series at the upcoming Webby Awards in New York City. In total, KateModern's more than 300 episodes have had in excess of 57 million views since its debut last Summer.
Co-founder of EQAL, Miles Beckett said, "KateModern has reached a critical peak in the storyline and as we complete the cycle, the many threads and mysterious elements will come together with an amazing conclusion - with the same high octane energy that has become a hallmark of the series. The last two seasons have been an incredible ride during which KateModern has secured a huge, engaged and fiercely loyal audience. While the show will conclude as planned, the LG15 universe continues to develop with plotlines crossing into its sister show lonelygirl15 and the possibility for more shows in the UK and abroad."
Bebo's President Joanna Shields said, "We could not be any prouder of KateModern and everything that it has achieved. It created a new genre and demonstrated the power of media on a social network with gripping storylines and peerless production values. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the EQAL producers, and look forward to what promises to be a compelling conclusion to the current story."
Using Bebo's social networking tools, KateModern introduced fans of the show to a new interactive entertainment experience where they would talk to the characters, producers and each other via their Bebo profiles, solve plot puzzles and suggest future ideas for the show. Moreover the show introduced 'event programming' and pioneering programming elements (talking points to its schedule) such as the MSN-sponsored 'Live Week', '12x12' - a twelve episode series finale marathon where the killer of the main character Kate was revealed, and a character exchange with its sister show lonelygirl15.
From its inception, KateModern was funded through creative integrations integration) of brands into the storyline; these have included MSN, Orange, P&G, Disney, Paramount, Cadbury Creme Egg and Toyota.
