London, UK, 24 July 2007: Bebo today announces the launch of a set of educational resources to promote the safe and responsible use of social networking across its user community. The resources are based on the most up-to-date guidance on online safety issues and precede the forthcoming release of a Home Office Internet Task Force report entitled 'Good Practice Guidance for the Providers of Social Networking and Other User Interactive Services'. Bebo has also consulted closely with the Department for Children, Schools and Families' Cyber-bullying Task Force in developing these materials.
The resources have been created in collaboration with parents, teachers and pupils across the UK and Ireland. The materials take the form of ten visually-engaging short videos and animations, which have been designed to encourage parents and young people to view the content together. Some of the videos feature content from the Ad Council, which is the leading producer of public service advertisements in the United States.
The resources are accessible via the URL - www.bebo.com/safety - and will also be available through the 'Safety' link found at the foot of every page on the Bebo site. The content is a significant development in support of Bebo's ongoing online education, safety and wellbeing initiatives.
Dr. Rachel O'Connell, chief safety officer, Bebo, said: "These educational resources are an important next step in the evolution of Bebo's safety measures. Our aim is to empower users with the tools, knowledge and skills to stay safe online by promoting an online community of tolerance, respect and inclusion."
Teaching materials are available as an accompaniment to the resources. Bebo has developed worksheets and teachers notes, and created an internet glossary to help schools educate younger users on about safe and responsible use social networking sites.
Dr. O'Connell concludes: "Social networks can be quite daunting for adults and teachers who are new to them. Rather than feeling like they are in a world that they have no control over, it is essential that today's adults develop an understanding of these sites to better inform and educate youngsters how to use them safely and positively. We expect these resources to stimulate dialogue between users."
