'Handprints' voted best new peace logo by global Bebo community

London, UK, 20 October 2009: Essex-based Dave Duffy, a native of Ireland, was unveiled as the winner of AOL-owned Bebo's global design competition to find the new, international symbol for peace. Launched in conjunction with Vision of Humanity, the 'Peace is Breaking Out' (http://www.bebo.com/peace) contest attracted overwhelming response, with a total of 78,677 page views* and 185 entries* received in just a three-week period, and nearly 6,000 votes* cast to determine the winner.

Duffy's winning design, two white handprints on a black background, took the top spot and triumphed over four short-listed entries as well as designs submitted by both amateur and professional designers from all over the world. According to Duffy, his design was inspired by 'children and the butterfly effect our actions have on their future, whether positive or negative.'

As the winner, he will receive a trip to Washington, DC, where his design will be unveiled at the Global Symposium of Peaceful Nations being held in November.

On the topic of what peace means to him, Duffy commented: "compassion and tolerance of different people, and consideration for the future, not just for our selfish present."

Rachel O'Connell, Chief Security Officer, Bebo commented: "Young people are clearly interested in sharing their ideas about peace, but this project unveiled a huge willingness to take action - through creativity and parlaying a personal vision of peace into something that could be accessed and discussed on an international scale. The idea behind this competition was to give young people an opportunity to reengage with the longstanding symbols of peace and to use this as a catalyst to create something that resonates with them and is reflective of our ever-changing world. We are thrilled that the competition yielded so much enthusiasm and so many entries, each one a unique perspective on peace that we hope will encourage more people to reflect on what peace means to them, now and in the future."

Sarah Gavin, VP Communications, AOL commented: "This initiative began as part of the International Day of Peace but has evolved into a real step-change in the degree to which young people feel they can engage in matters of international importance."

Steve Killelea, founder of Vision of Humanity, said: "We are delighted that Peace is Breaking Out proved a successful way to engage young people in the peace process, by tapping into their latent creativity. Social media platforms like Bebo have the ability to harness creativity and ingenuity for a greater cause, and what better cause than advocating for global peace. We congratulate all of the participants."
