The great town of western folklore, now nothing but a few buildings recreated from photos since the original town was destroyed by fire. If you are traveling through the area, then it is worth the stop to visit. It is not worth a specific trip to visit from any great distrance. This is my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions........... | ||

| Built in 1874 for the purpose of defending settlers in southwest Kansas. Medicine Lodge got it's name from the many indian lodges built near the river. It was claimed that the river had healing properties. The log cabin was moved to the replica fort, in 1961, from Alva, OK. The log cabin was originally built by Robert M. Smith in 1877. The original location of the stockade is the area where the center of Medicine Lodge is located today. Some of the items in the first few pictures are period items donated to the museum. | ||

| Sutter's Fort, 1839-1850. First settlement built in the area of what is now Sacramento. The walls were 2 1/2 feet thick and 15-18 feet high. The fort contained quarters for his workers, a bakery, grist mill, blanket factory, blacksmith shop, carpenter shop, gunsmith shop, and other shops. Outside the shop were quarters for his guests and other staff. Farming included wheat, barley, peas, beans, and cotton. He had a whiskey and brandy distillery as well as a beer brewery. From his wheat crop, he would export part of it to Russian Alaska. Fur trading was also part of the business at the fort. A tannery was built on the American River. While building a lumber mill in order to sell wood, gold was discovered, which began the great gold rush in California. | ||

| It is amazing to learn that all the bones on display were removed onsite. Also,to see that tar is still bubbling up out of the ground. After leaving the LaBrea Tarpits, we walked around a little on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. This is where we found a wax museum dedicated to actors in movie scenes. Pictures are not very good, but it is a cool place. | ||

| Stopped off at the train museum in Omaha. It is a beautiful building and display, but was a little disappointed with the fact there were no trains to speak of. just one small section of a train. Figured here there would be many different types of cars and locomotives. Oh well, still a good stop if your passing by on I-80/I-29. | ||

| I remember this zoo being better than this. Found out that the zoo got in trouble and lost some animals. They were moved to other zoo's. That may explain the empty exhibits and low census. Was not impressed with the zoo in its current condition. | ||
