The towns lying on the Amalfi Coast are Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Ravello, Scala, Atrani, Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Praiano and Positano. Renowned for its rugged terrain, scenic beauty, picturesque towns and diversity, the Amalfi Coast is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. | Lubeck, Queen of the Hansa and a great Xmas Market destination. Lubeck, The Queen of the Hanseatic League, was founded in 1143 as the "first German city on the Baltic coast". Surrounded by water on all sides, the old town has a historic centre dominated by seven church steeples. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list because of its superb brick Gothic architecture. The remarkable Holstentor Gate is the defining feature of the Lubeck skyline. With its compact medieval street plan on an island, its reminders of past glory, its family oriented Xmas markets and events its rich literary associations Lubeck earns its place as one of the best cities to visit in Europe, particularly in the run up to Christmas. | Waddesdon Manor was built (1874-89) by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild to display his outstanding collection of art treasures and to entertain the fashionable world. On a hilltop overlooking the Aylesbury Vale, it is the last remaining complete example of 'le goût Rothschild'. The House combines the highest quality French furniture, textiles and decorative arts from the 18th century with magnificent English portraits and Dutch Old Master paintings. | Spent the 31st October helping with testing of the new St Pancras Station which will be part a new transport hub with 50M passengers a year when it is completed - busier than any airport. St Pancras train station was designed by William Barlow in 1863 with construction commencing in 1866. The famous Barlow train shed arch spans 240 feet and is over 100 feet high at its apex. On its completion in 1868 it became the largest enclosed space in the world. One of the most recognisable features of St Pancras station today, the red brick Grade 1 listed Gothic front façade was created as part of a competition in 1865 and became the Midland Great Hotel designed by Sir Gilbert Scott and built between 1868 to 1876. | Strategically located and surrounded on three sides by the "Choir" of the Alps where two rivers, the Dora and Stura, join the Po this is the roman garrison town of Augusta Taurinorum, which in 1563, Duke Emmanuelle Filberto made capital of Savoy and in 18th Century his successors (who were now also Kings of Sardinia) rebuilt as a Royal Capital in the baroque style to make it unique amongst Italian cities which by contrast are medieval or renaissance in character. This was the capital of Piedmont a powerful kingdom which defeated the French and Austrian armies and which was Britain's ally in Crimea. Today it boasts 11 royal palaces including 6 surviving on the outskirts (of the original 9) providing the "Crown of Delights" surrounding the city. This was the city which made Italy a nation. | 18 Miles fom Castle Caldwell lies the city of the "Dreaming Spires", the historic University city of Oxford. Oxford, is famous the world over for its University and place in history. For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars, and since the 9th century an established town, although people are known to have lived in the area for thousands of years. Nowadays, the city is a bustling cosmopolitan town. Still with its ancient University, but home also to a growing hi-tech community. Many businesses are located in and around the town, whether on one of the Science and Business Parks or within one of a number of residential areas. Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and lays claim to nine centuries of continuous existence. Oxford is a collegiate university, with 39 self-governing colleges related to the University in a type of federal system. | ||

| We live in the Vale of Aylesbury just the far side of the Chiltern Hills from London and about 2 miles from Chequers, the Prime Ministers country home. Buckinghamshire is one of the loveliest of the Home Counties - some say the loveliest - and its Chiltern hills and beechwoods, beautiful River Thames and the rolling acres of Aylesbury Vale make it a place for visitors to enjoy. Country walks run between picturesque villages with a host of welcoming pubs. We are overlooked by the Chiltern Escarpement. The Chilterns lie only a few miles north-west of London and yet they are an unspoilt area of rolling chalk hills, magnificent beechwoods, quiet valleys and charming brick and flint villages. A wonderful mosaic of woods, fields, hedges, sunken lanes and clear streams. | ||
