Just as the sun was beginning to rise at 5.30am on Saturday 12th September, Geraldine, Debbie, Lara and Suzanne packed up their truck and made their way to the RAF Leuchars Air Show 2009. This annual event attracts over 50,000 spectators from all around the globe and boasts flying displays from some of the world’s most renowned fleets including the Red Arrows, the Falcons and the Typhoons. This is the first year that AICR have had a display stand at the air show, and after finding their spot at the end of the runway and trying to assemble their marquee in gusting winds of up to 60mph, everyone was ready and raring to go by the time gates opened at 8am. http://www.aicr.org.uk/LeucharsAirSh...

Visit from Local MSP (1 photo)
Local MSP Sir Menzies Campbell popped into the AICR Office in St Andrews on Friday 10th July. While here on his visit he was keen to find out about the work that we carry out here in his local constituency in North East Fife. He spent time with all members of staff and was interested to find out about the work that each department carried out on a daily basis. He was very enthusiastic about the work that we are carrying out online and felt that it was very forward thinking.

Edinburgh Marathon 2009 (3 photos)
Stuart McDonald was diagnosed with Colon Cancer back in January 2008 when he was just 29 years old. He underwent surgery and recovered well but just as he was on the road to recovery his mother was also diagnosed with the same form of cancer in June of that year. Thankfully, she too has made a good recovery. At that point Stuart decided that he wanted to raise money for cancer research to help people in the same situation. This is what he had to say when he contacted us here at AICR. Read more about Stuart's effort here: http://www.aicr.org.uk/EdinburghMara...

4 Half Marathons in a Month! (1 photo)
In April 2009, Gary Williams undertook four half marathons in a month to raise money for AICR. This is what Gary had to say about his fantastic fundraising effort. “What started off as some bad diary management I found I had entered 2 half marathons in a month, turned into a bit of a challenge when I mentioned this to a friend who said glibly that I may as well fill in the other two weekends with half marathons. This at first seemed ludicrous but as I considered it, it made a huge amount of sense as each would in turn be a form of training for the next. So I set about finding 2 more half marathons that fitted around the first 2 – the more people I mentioned this to the more I thought about doing this for charity as everyone thought I was mad and it would take a lot out of me. AICR is honoured to have The Earl of St Andrews as Patron of the charity. On Tuesday 23rd June 2009, Lord St Andrews, visited the AICR office to discuss the work we are carrying out. During his visit Lord St Andrews spent time with all of the staff finding out about our fundraising activities and the projects we have underway. Lord St Andrews was accompanied on the visit by his cousin James Ogilvy who is a long serving board member of AICR. We were delighted that the Earl took time out from his busy schedule to visit us.

Dragon Ride 2009 (3 photos)
Rene Meridith from California in the USA is taking part in the Dragon Ride on Sunday 14th June 2009 in Bridgend, Wales on behalf of AICR. The main reason that Rene is undertaking this challenge is in memory of her friend Kevin Hatch. Kevin had been fighting Hodgkins Lymphoma for the last 3 years and one of his life long wishes was to visit the UK. Rene and her friends had decided to make his wish come true and at the same time raise money for AICR. By holding a silent auction and a "Dinner and A Show" fundraising night Rene and her friends had raised enough money to pay for 3 flights over to the UK. Unfortunately on 25th April Kevin sadly passed away. Rene is still going to take part in the Dragon Ride but she is now sadly riding in memory of Kevin. Please help her to raise as much money as possible before the race in June. You can do this by donating here http://www.aicr.org.uk/DragonRide200... . Our thoughts go out to Kevin's friends and family and we wish Rene every success

Land Rover Malta Marathon 2009 (8 photos)
One of our supporters is preparing to run a marathon in Malta to raise vital funds for our vital cancer research. 58 year old Vivien Mifsud, whose husband's family is from the island, decided to take on the challenge after her friend’s prostate cancer returned in a much more aggressive form. Hearing of his struggle with the disease motivated her to put her running shoes on for AICR. Sadly her friend passed away recently. Vivien took part in the Land Rover Malta Marathon on Sun 1st March. She said: “I’ve been giving money to AICR regularly for more than 20 years but I felt it was time to use my hobby to raise more money for research. Cancer affects nearly every family and if I can do just a little to help, I will.”

Second Life Big Blast (37 photos)
The AICR Big Blast, is an event to help raise money towards cancer research. AICR have been in Secondlife since 2007 and have held a lot of in-world events. These fun events have helped raise a great deal of money, and in the process all participants have had fun. AICR also have their very own island! On the island there are villas to rent, a fashion show area, cancer information area, shops and their very own club. All money raised from the villa rentals and shops goes towards funding cancer research. A lot of users have praised AICR on the level of detail found at the cancer information area, located on the island. http://www.aicr.org.uk/SecondLifeBig...

The Winchell Riots SL and Oxford Gig (38 photos)
"The Winchell Riots" played a very special concert on Friday 23rd January in their home city of Oxford. The Guardian newspaper said the following about the band, "They might be literate, articulate types, but they're intense...The economy of Snow Patrol meets the intensity of Sigur Ros". Not only did they playing at the O2 Academy as part of a British tour, but the concert was broadcast live on the internet and the band also played in the virtual world of Second Life at the same time. The Second Life gig was a way for the band to highlight the work of AICR and for us to say a big "thank you" to our many supporters in the virtual world.

SL - Ghost Lion Events and DX Exchange (21 photos)
On the 10th and 11th January, our Dutch friends at Ghost Lion Events and DX Exchange ran a 2 day music event in Second Life to raise money for AICR. On the 10th Jan the event took place in the City Park in the virtual city of Groningen. 5 DJs took part as well as 4 live acts. The crowds were enormous and at certain times of the day it was so busy that it was impossible to get in. On the 11th Jan the event moved to the "Best of Rotterdam" event area. 5 more DJs and 4 more live acts played for a total of 14 hours and again the crowds were amazing. AICR representatives dropped in a few times a day over the weekend to thank our supporters and we met lots of new friends. On behalf of everyone at AICR we would like to thank all of the organisers, the DJs and musicians who gave up their time and talent, and the hundreds of people who came along, took part and made generous donations.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Chris for undertaking this adventure on AICR's behalf and are so appreciative of his efforts. SAC Meeting (15 photos)
We are often asked exactly how we allocate the money that we raise. To give you a better idea of the process, we go behind the scenes of a meeting of our Scientific Advisory Committee. The SAC meets twice a year in Edinburgh and discusses the project applications received in the previous round. Each application has already been peer reviewed by 2 experts in the field prior to its consideration here. The SAC spends up to 2 days working its way through the projects giving each a score. Once all projects have been thoroughly discussed, they make the tough funding decisions ensuring that only science of the highest calibre receives support. The following pictures give you a glimpse into how the process works.
