Kobe was hit by the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995 which killed over 5,500 people and injured over 26,000. Since then it has been rebuilt into a beautiful mulicultural city. Surrounded by mountains and sea and only a short train ride from Osaka, it's the best place I've been to in Japan so far.
