My name is Pearse and I am from Gweedore in the Donegal gaeltacht. I’m 33 years old and am a Sinn Féin TD. I was born in Glasgow and moved back home when only four years old. I go back once or twice a year to catch up with friends and family and catch a Celtic game. I was elected to the Senate in 2007 becoming the first ever Senator for Sinn Féin ans as a TD in 2010. Went to college in DIT Botlon St and studied civil engineering, qualified as a civil engineer technician, must say spent more of time with Sinn Féin than with on college god only knows how I passed my exams. Spend most of my time trying build support for Sinn Féin so that we can bring about a United Ireland, with equality for all. Doherty supports students housing demands
Doherty supports students housing demands
Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Senator Pearse Doherty has supported calls from the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) for a task for on student accommodation to be established. Speaking today Senator Doherty said students should not be forced to decide which college to attend solely on the basis of the price of accommodation.
Senator Doherty said,
"There's a critical housing shortage in Ireland in general, which is having a very obvious negative affect on students. While the student grant has increased in recent years rent has increased at a much higher level leading to further difficulties for students whose biggest worries should be on their studies.
"I want to support the students' call for a task force on student accommodation to be established. At the very least the grant for students must increase at a rate equal to the increase in rents.
"Provision should be made for purpose built student accommodation to satisfy the demand - student accommodation should preferably be on campus or in close proximity. The Government especially need to target areas where there is an acute shortage of affordable rental accommodation near a college.
"Student rent must be affordable, accommodation should not entail students literally living on top of each other - they need adequate space to study and live in reasonable comfort and there must be tight regulations concerning landlords.
"Students should not be forced to decide which college to attend solely on the basis of the price of accommodation." ENDS

NORTH WEST CANCER CARE 'A MAJOR POLITICAL PRIORITY' - MARTIN McGUINNESS
NORTH WEST CANCER CARE 'A MAJOR POLITICAL PRIORITY' - MARTIN McGUINNESS
Published: 29 April, 2007
Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness, MP, MLA, (Deputy First Minister designate in the Six Counties) has declared that dedicated cancer care provision for the North West will be a "major political priority" in the new Executive.
Mr McGuinness was speaking after his first meeting with the newly-formed Co-operating for Cancer Care (NW) group in Letterkenny on Saturday morning. The meeting was requested by Mr McGuinness ahead of the re-establishment of the Executive on May 8.
Donegal Sinn Féin representatives, Cllr Pádraig Mac Lochlainn and Cllr Pearse Doherty, accompanied Mr McGuinness to the meeting.
Mr McGuinness said:
"This was an important and constructive meeting. Dedicated cancer care provision for the North West - specifically a satellite radiotherapy unit - has consistently been a demand made by Sinn Féin.
"Within the new Executive, I am determined that the issue of dedicated cancer care for the North West will be a major political priority.
"The people of Donegal, and the wider North West, have been repeatedly let down by empty promises and false dawns on this issue. That never was, and is not now, acceptable to Sinn Féin.
"Cancer care provision for the North West is an opportunity for the new Executive to demonstrate the benefits of real and meaningful all-Ireland development.
"Together with political colleagues throughout the North West, I believe that we can rapidly deliver that goal."
Commenting after the meeting, Cllr Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said:
"Donegal Sinn Féin believes that an all-Ireland approach to North West cancer care is critical. We are grateful that Martin McGuinness has pledged to place this issue high up the political agenda in the new Executive.
"Everyone in Donegal should be united on the core demand for dedicated cancer care provision for the North West region.
"With that unity of purpose, the people of Donegal should now be aiming to translate years of campaigning into a permanent solution for the region.
"The practical and political logic of all-Ireland co-operation on this issue - as on every other issue - is undeniable.
"Alongside our party colleagues in the Six County Assembly, Donegal Sinn Féin once again pledges to keep regional cancer care provision for the North West - specifically a satellite radiotherapy unit - as our paramount political priority in the time ahead."
