Hunter S. Thompson was a humble man who wrote books for a living and spent the rest of his time bogged down in strange and crazy wars. He was the author of many violent books and brilliant political essays, which his friends and henchmen in the international media managed for many years to pass off as "Gonzo Journalism".
The reasons for this are myriad, and we will speak of them later. Dr. Thompson lived the life of a freelance country gentleman in Woody Creek, Colorado, existing in a profoundly active Balance of Terror with the local police authorities until his death in 2005.
**These are the words of Thompson himself, after his death the publisher of his books edited the piece to acknowledge his passing.

The Gonzo Tapes
The Gonzo Tapes, a five-disc set of unreleased recordings by Rolling Stone’s own Hunter S. Thompson, will be released on October 28th. Compiled while filmmakers were producing Gonzo: The Life And Work Of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, the audio on The Gonzo Tapes was recorded between 1965 and 1975, with Thompson using the tapes to capture his thoughts and descriptions of what was happening around him or to look back at what he experienced.

COMPETITION TIME
That’s right folks, its time to disprove the rumour that I am merely a pawn of shady corporate toads and that I spend my nights counting blood money by the fading light like a power obsessed Wall Street jerk on the rise. Hell I can barely afford to get drunk these days…not that I don’t, where there is a will there is a way. Anyway I have decided to reward you lot for your faithful visits to this haven of all things Gonzo. Together with HSTbooks we are offering two splendid prizes and an excuse to throw a party in honour of The Good Doctor this July 18th - which would have been Dr. Thompson’s 70th. So what do you have to do exactly eh???
Well first off we just want you to do something to mark Hunters birthday. We don’t care what you do exactly - invite your friends around and have a good time, have a few drinks or whatever, light a huge bonfire, set off fireworks - really it is up to you! The only requirement is that you take a photo of whatever you are doing and INCLUDE THE WORD GONZO somewhere in the photo. Hold up a sign, write it on your friends face in permanent marker, spell it out with bars of soap for all I care - just make it interesting and original. Then send the photo to us at totallygonzo@gmail.com or to HSTbooks at hstbooks@gmail.com
The winner will be picked on Friday August 1st by an independent third party. Winning photos will be posted on both sites for everyone else to bitch about. The competition is open to everyone except George W. Bush & Dick Cheney.
The prizes are as follows:
1st Prize: - Rolling Stone Cover to Cover Digital Database - All the issues for the past 40 years on a searchable digital database. This includes all of Hunters Rolling Stone contributions from Fear and Loathing to Polo Is My Life.
2nd Prize: - A brand new copy of The Curse of Lono Taschen Edition.
3rd Prize: - Shame on your family.
Prizes are not exchangeable for cash alternatives or drugs and the judges decision is final. Bribery will be most welcome but will result in our pleasure and your loss of earnings and nothing more. Moaning about your prize not working on your computer will be met with prompt ridicule of your crap computer.

P.S. Hey Rube is pretty good but he goes on a lot about American football and I suppose thats why its hard to get it in the UK, worth a read mind you, just because of the classic Hunter style and some of the stories and criticism on politics and gambling cant fail to make you laugh. -
