- Are you one of the half a million Irish people who suffer from migraine?
Well if you are, the Migraine Association of Ireland was set up in 1994 to offer information, support and reassurance to people just like you.
Since then the association has grown and membership has passed the 1,000 mark!
However, that's only a tiny proportion of the 500,000 sufferers out there! So if you suffer from migraine or you know someone who does - ask them to join our Bebo Community or visit our website on www.migraine.ie!
Also, from just €36 per year (€10 for students and unemployed), you can become a supporter of the Association and receive our quarterly newsletter, e-zine, notificiation of and free entry to events and lots more! See website for details.
- Food!
- Have to be careful here. Diet is cited by about 20% of sufferers as a trigger for migraine. Foods like chocolate, alcohol (especially red wine), coffee, cheese and citrus fruits are some of the most common triggers. Typical! Other cited triggers are foods containing MSG (like Chinese and Hot Dogs), processed meats, fizzy drinks, nuts and fatty foods!
In 2010, we'll be producing a new leaflet on migraine and diet so if you're interested in receiving a copy just call us on the helpline numbers below! - Sleep!
- We all love to sleep but for migraineurs ... sleep (or lack of) can be the enemy. In our survey, 26% said that disturbed sleep triggered their migraine, 34% said that oversleeping was a problem AND almost half said that lack of sleep was a trigger (that puts an end to a string of late nights out!)
- Exercise!
- Regular mild exercise can help prevent migraine. BUT ... some people find that over-exertion can trigger attacks, as can a lack of exercise!
- Scared Of
- Aura! The primarily visual disturbance that affects about 20% of migraine sufferers. Ranging from jagged lines to flashing lines, the aura can last for up to sixty minutes.
- Happiest When
- Migraine-free!
- Website
- You can access our official website at: www.migraine.ie or you can join our online Facebook and Twitter Communities.
- Helpline
- Our helpline number is 1850 200 378 (ROI) or 0844 826 9323 (NI). However, you can also get more information by emailing: info@migraine.ie

Entry 2 - June Update
July 1st & I’m very excited! Today is my 12th day without a migraine! I’m chuffed with myself. I’ve just looked up my account with www.MigraineMonitor.ie & I see that I only had 5 migraines in June, compared with 6 in May & 7 in April. The 3 triggers that cropped up in June were sleep, period & weather. 2 of those I can’t control, but making sure my sleep patterns are even can be a challenge, especially as I work late into the night Monday to Friday. I got a super kick on June 1st from taking part in the Flora Mini-Marathon in aid of The Migraine Association of Ireland. I highly recommend all women sign up for 2010 – I will! I’m very positive about my health for July. A 12 day break from migraine is amazing for me & I want to keep adding to it. I find it helpful to have an ultimate goal…. I will live migraine free. Full stop. No excuses. Have a great month & check out www.Migraine.ie for super dooper helpful tips.0 Comments 56 weeks

Entry 1 - An MAI member speaks about migraine
I’ve been using www.MigraineMonitor.ie since April 1st & no joke – it’s terrific to be able to look back & disect what’s been going on in my head! I’d 7 migraines in April & one was a 10 pain threshold. I’d a lot of life changing activity going on in April, so my stress levels were way up & I spent two days in Beaumont as a result. So I knew things had to change in May. It’s the 28th today & I’ve had five migraines, but two of these were 10 pain threshold. One I can put down to my period – (still trying to break the cycle of having a thumping head when it begins - although since I starting taking black cohosh herbal tablets from 4 days before my period is due, I've had slight relief. Black cohosh is my alternative to oestrogen patches as oestrogen levels fall before a period & can trigger migraines. Never take my advice on what you should take - talk to your Medical Porfessional) & the other I attribute to a stressful/frightening experience where I felt in danger. The others I can’t explain. I did a Bio Energy session for migraine this month & found it very calming / relaxing. I’m incorporating what I learned into my daily meditation routine to keep stress down.0 Comments 61 weeks

Hey Migraine Ireland,
Thank you for all the wonderful work you are doing for migraine suffers. I've been suffering for the last 17 years & the one thing that has worked for me & kept me migraine free for a few months at a time is acupuncture, hope this info might help someone

Ali Cookie2/12/09Hey this is a really great way to make young people and he public in general realise that migraine is not just a synonym for headache! I have sufferred from migraines (though infrequetly) since I was a child and they have intensified since my teens.
Just a note to everyone to remember to set their screen at the right settings so as to avoid cauing a migraine, as the wrong flicker rate can contribute.
Can we see more info about eg food additives' affect on migraine, menstrual migraine and current research? Thank you!!! -

hey. Nice to see a propper support group here.
Have been suffering for about 7 years now.
It's so hard to make my boss realise that its not just a headache and I hate the jokes (Oh you must have been out on the lash last night)
I was actually told today by my boss that for 2009 I need to keep the sick days to a minimum! Yes coz I can control when I'm gonna get one!! DUH!!!
There needs to be more awareness that migranes can be extremely disabling at times.
I can feel one starting now anyway. The flashy spots and general stupidness has started so I am now waiting for the pain to begin.
If anyone feels like chatting to someone who knows your pain, literally, send me a message.
take care -
