THE aunt of missing Coolock girl Amy Fitzpatrick has praised the Government’s decision to establish an Amber Alert system for missing people.
The system was given the green light by Minister for Justice, Dermot Ahern, last week in a move welcomed by the family of Amy Fitzpatrick who had campaigned for over a year for its introduction.
Christine Kenny, Amy’s aunt, told Northside People that while the system may be too late for some, it offers hope for the future.
“I am very pleased with the news that this Amber Alert system will be going ahead,” said Ms Kenny.
“I collected over 20,000 signatures for the minister and the European Parliament in an effort to get this scheme introduced.
“I have also been in touch with other campaigners, including Gerry McCann (Madeline McCann’s father) who were keen to see this system brought in.”
Mrs Kenny said the system will allow governments and their departments to work together more efficiently to find missing children.
“We need a common response to emergency situations where children go missing with co-ordination between different governments,” she added.
“It’s a matter that needs to be taken very seriously and there are a lot of recommendations to be put into practice over the coming months.”
Minister Ahern announced the planned Amber Alert system following a report from the Garda Síochána Inspectorate on the handling of missing persons’ cases.
“It is heartbreaking when a person, and particularly a child, goes missing,” he said.
“Families and friends suffer immeasurable distress. We must do all we can to help locate missing loved ones.
“I welcome the Inspectorate’s recommendation to establish an alert system for missing children.
“This will be a challenging task and it will require the support of a whole range of governmental agencies, NGOs and the media, as well as the support of the public.
“I am confident that the Garda Síochána will receive the necessary support from all concerned to put an alert system in place.”
