RAIN DOESN’T STOP FAHY TREC COMPETITION

This past May Bank Holiday Monday was a busy day for horse lovers, as Gallagher’s Farm in combination with TrecMayo, hosted a one day TREC competition in the hills of Fahy. Despite the poor weather, over thirty riders of mixed ages, skill levels, and nationalities, exhibited their equestrian prowess in what Gerry Gallagher himself described as a “successful day, safe, fun, and pretty challenging.” The challenge itself took two parts. In the morning, riders tackled an involved obstacle course, replete with jumps, corridors, and a simulation of riding under “low branches”. While in the afternoon, riders embarked on the two hour long TREC itself.
The sport of TREC, or Trekking, as its fondly referred to by its practitioners, originated in France (“Le Trec”) as a way for professional Treccing guides to cement their skills: rather than focusing on isolated activities like jumping or dressage, the Trec combines them. The basic gist of Trec is (1) trail riding, (2) jumping, and (3) correct flatwork. For individuals who enjoy horse riding, but tend to turn away from the usual dressage and jumping competitions, the Trec offers an enjoyable, competitive substitute. Events in Fahy prove the sport only continues to grow and evolve in its Irish setting.
The overall winner of the PTV Obstacle Course was Padraig Mulchrone (Glenhest). The Best Control of Pace award went to local man Adrian Cawley (Fahy). While The Best Overall Orienteering award went to sisters Siofrech and Athria Loftus. The top three overall winners, on a basis of combined scoring, were (1st place) Anna Kelly / Adrian Cawley, (2nd place) Regina Carroll / Simon Robertson, (3rd place) Orla Dempsey / Tanya Salis For a full list of Monday’s results see trecireland.com.
