  • B COMPANY CADETS DO THEIR BIT FOR VETERANS DAY

Veteran Niall Archibald, Soldiers of 2 SCOTS in their desert uniforms and Cadets of Glasgow and Lanarkshire Battalion ACF ensured it was a “Full House” at the summit of Ben More (Crianlarich); at 1174 metres the highest mountain in the South West Highlands.

The Past, Present and (potentially) Future members of the Armed Forces family set off from Glen Dochart east of Crianlarich, despite the low, dense cloud and the absence of any promising views from the summit. The forecast of 30 mph easterly winds meant we would have to reassess the conditions at the col or saddle between Ben More and its neighbouring twin peak Stob Binnein.

Thanks to the easing of the wind speed, the lack of wind chill and the mountain safety and security provided by Captain Alex Sweet we were able to proceed with caution. Captain Sweet, OC Recce Platoon of 2 SCOTS, is a qualified Mountain Leader. He was accompanied by 9 of his soldiers consisting of 4 “Jocks” and 5 other Fusiliers from the Commonwealth including 4 Fijians.

The two gutsy Cadets who volunteered for this tough hillwalk were Lance Corporal Jojo Williams and Cadet John Paul Donnelly both from Milton, Glasgow. They attend F Platoon (RHF) Detachment based at Hotspur Street, Maryhill, home of 6 SCOTS. They both completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition at Warcop at Easter Camp and were keen to do the day hike to mark Armed Forces Day. “Quite a few of the groups got a bit lost on the Duke of Edinburgh hikes because they weren't really following the bearings. Jojo and me had to use the bearings in cloud on the mountain and keep checking the direction” said John Paul.

“We shared the map reading and swapped the rucksack through the day” said Lance Corporal Williams. “I wondered if the altitude would affect me as I have never done anything like this before”. He was reassured that you would have to go to the Himalayas or the Andes to be affected by altitude. Some of the 2 SCOTS soldiers had climbed Mount Kenya during their R&R after their successful field training in Kenya earlier this year. (Mount Kenya is 5,199 metres or 17,057 feet.)

Lance Corporal Williams picked up quite a lot of information through this experience. “The col or saddle between the mountains is called a bealach in Gaelic. At 1174 metres Ben More is way higher than anything in England and Wales. I'd like to know how high that is in feet. It's well over 3,000 feet making it the 16th highest mountain in Britain.” (Afternote: Ben More is 3,852 feet high.)

Cadet Donnelly and Lance Corporal Williams are looking forward to this year's Annual Camp at Swinteron and to continue to progress with the Cadets. John Paul will be going to North Glasgow College in August and Jojo Williams is considering joining the Territorial Army.

They were supervised on this hillwalk by Lynette Brough, who was herself a Cadet and continued to progress as an Adult Volunteer, reaching the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major. She said, “I really enjoyed the day but it was very tiring. Maybe it was the wet ground made it hard going. The Cadets did very well to make it to the top in the conditions. It was just a pity we did not have the views.” RSM Brough climbed Ben More on 17 May in preparation for this event. “On my recce in May I was really lucky with the weather as the clouds lifted in the afternoon. I checked out a different descent route but that just confirmed we were better off coming down the same way we went up. It was much safer, less steep and less of a detour. Also the bearings were simple”.

Overall this was a really enjoyable, fun event although everyone felt a bit stiff after such strenuous exercise. Our thanks to Lieutenant Colonel Nick Borton MBE DSO, CO 2 SCOTS and to Colonel Allan Downie TD, Cadet Commandant for authorising this event. We hope that further links between 2 SCOTS and B (RHF) Coy can be arranged for the benefit of the Cadets.

2Troop Scots DG recently attended the Veterans Lunch held at the Royal British Legion in East Kilbride.
there where many dignatories in attendence not to mention all the Veterans which included both of Sgt Hindley's parents.
the cadets assisted the many Veterans by helping with drinks and sandwiches and most importantly just chatting with the Veterans and listening to stories of there time in the Armed Forces.
the Cadets of 2Troop recieved many compliments including that of the Brigadier himself a Royal Scots Dragoon Guard who commented on how well turned out the Troop where and how seeing them wearing their uniform and distinctive Grey berets made him feel very proud.
the cadets have already been invited to attend next years event as they did such a sterling job, one veteran commented "they are a credit to both themselves and the Army Cadet Force, you should all be very proud".

i'd like to thank everyone in glasgow and lanarkshire for thier support and encouragement.
i'd like to say to all cadets and adults that you can achieve anything you set your mind to if you work hard enough.
i'm proud to be a member of the army cadet force and just as passionate about what the cadet force can offer both cadet and adult members from team-building and time-keeping to military and outdoor skills not forgetting b-tec and DofE
now i've been named as the winner i can think of no-one better to donate £500 to than the cadets at 2 tp scots dg without thier enthusiasm and passion i wouldnt be where i am today.

thanks again i'll see you all at annual camp and remember work hard as the only person from stopping you achieving your goals is you.
