BACKGROUND TO GREENBOW
Greenbow was founded on 17th March 1996. There were no Deaf lesbian and gay group previous to 1996. So, a number of Deaf gay people wanted to set up a Deaf gay group so they contacted LOT (Lesbian Organisation Together) for more information and they agreed to let them rent a room for meetings. In the early days, few people attended our meetings and we then decided to organise social nights. Our first ever social night was held at Out of the Liffey pub. It was successful and we named it ‘Irish Rainbow of Deaf Lesbian and Gay Group.’ One year later, Irish Rainbow of Deaf Lesbian and Gay Group changed its name to “Greenbow” and from there on we were known as Greenbow. In October 2002, our organisation was officially named “Greenbow Deaf Lesbian,Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Society of Ireland.
