"Recording a verdict of suicide, Mr Sykes said: "The Emo overtones concerning death and associating it with glamour I find very disturbing."

The Emo phenomenon began in the U.S. in the 1980s. It is a largely teenage trend and is characterised by depression, self-injury and suicide.

Followers wear tight jeans with studded belts and wristbands. Their hair is dyed black and worn in long fringes to obscure their faces.

Emo - from the word emotional - is a reference to the angst-filled lyrics and melancholy themes of the rock music central to the culture.

One of the foremost of these "suicide cult" bands is My Chemical Romance, from New Jersey.

Their first single, Welcome to the Black Parade, from the album The Black Parade, was released in 2006 and became a huge hit, going to number one in Britain.

The concept album follows the story of a character called The Patient, who dies of cancer.

The Black Parade is a nickname for the place where Emo fans believe they will go when they die.

Emo, which stands for "emotional, is a youth movement based around dark music, dark clothing and a dark view of the world.

It was pioneered in America and emo followers adhere to a host of cult-like conventions to demonstrate dedication to this new wave of pop music and lifestyle.

The emo brand of music sounds much like indie or rock, but it takes its unique name from the emotional lyrics and melancholy themes.

One of the forerunners of this genre is the band My Chemical Romance from New Jersey, America.

While most fans simply enjoy the music and dress, others take their fascination to a sinister level.

They indulge in self-harming and become obsessed with death and suicide."

I cannot believe the lengths of today's society go to to shun "emo" as a group of silly 13 year olds who slit their wrists because it's "cool". I'm sorry about Hannah Bond's killing herself, but My Chemical Romance really can't be blamed for this. They were quoted on their official website saying:

"My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide. As a band, we have always made it one of our missions through our actions to provide comfort, support, and solace to our fans. The message and theme of our album "The Black Parade" is hope and courage. Our lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times. The last song on our album states: "I am not afraid to keep on living" - a sentiment that embodies the band's position on hardships we all face as human beings. If you or anyone that you know have feelings of depression or suicide, we urge you to find your way and your voice to deal with these feelings positively."

If these people who back the Daily Mail and The Sun stopped to listen to the lyrics of The Black Parade and 3 Cheers, they would eventually comprehend how MCR are a group of 5 people who want to help save lives.

And I think the most unfair part of all of this is how emos are stereotyped into a group of whiny, self-obsessed teenagers. We can all admit to feeling depressed every now and again, regardless of which stereotype we fit into, but when you see that the unhappy one is in skinny jeans with a side fringe, it becomes your duty to judge them and laugh. Think about it.

when you think about it, arn't mcr doing the same thing as the mothers meeting or whatever it's called. they exist to help kids who need help, to tell people they arnt alone. they are against violence, racism, sexism and ignorance and isnt that what the Mothers want?? MCR just use a much better, bigger and awesome-er way of doing it than banning a genre of music. (yeah, like that was gunna work)

im a MASSIVE MCR fan i love them dearly and there my FAV band EVER!!
i think that people who say that MCR are bad imfulances on childen have cleary neer listend 2 them, or read soooooooooo much shit about them and belive it. like last yr when the daily mail brought out a newspaper artical saying that MCR are a "death cult" sooooooo meny parents belived it!! where i live MCR are consided the biggest death cult band EVER!!
i feel sooooooooo sorry 4 ppl who have parents who are against MCR i really feel 4 u

iv seen em a few times and most of the times iv been gerard has said 2 the crowds that the alst thing there band would ever want 2 do is cause self harm 2 ppl!

I JUST DON'T GET IT!!
I am crazy obsessed with MCR just like most of you i'm sure.
My mum is into Dance/electro music...i quite like it to...as in 'i can stand it'

The thing that really pisses me off.....is that she teases me NON STOP!!! she asks me what colour want my room...and before i can answer she has said 'oh i bet you want it all black with blood and skeletons' it is getting really annoying....i have 1 wall in my room that has a large window....that wall i want 2 be black...my mum said that i could have it black.......then dark purple....then black AND NOW IT'S FUCKING DARK PURPLE AGAIN. She says 'the purple will be so dark that it looks black' WHY NOT JUST HAVE IT BLACK THEN!!!!!!!!!!! I AM GETTING SO ANNOYED! FYI IT DOESNT LOOK BLACK AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!! MY ROOM IS LILAC WIT A PURPLE WALL AND A WHITE WALL!!!!!! i just need 2 get a load of posters BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! my mum doesnt want me 'poluting my walls'

Also..she said i could see an MCR concert on my own when i am 14... (i am 13 at the mo) but the other day she chnged her mind and 16 INSTEAD!!!!!!!!! IT'S SO UNFAIR!!! but on the bright side she will let me get red highlights in my hair at the beginning of the 2008 summer holidays so that it will have come out by the time i go bak 2 skl WTF IS EVEN THE POINT OF GETTING THEM THEN????.

what really pisses me off is that she used 2 be into 'the cure', 'Metalica', 'Led Zepelin' etc.....and she used be all black clothes, rebellion etc and SHE GOES ON AT ME FOR BEING LIKE THAT!!!!HIPOCRITE!!!!!

I know he condones this M.A.H.R rubbish JUST BECAUSE he'd rather that all teenagers sat in front of their TV sets and watched High School Musical.

High School Musical is clearly the worst thing ever, and why he is supporting it will never get through to me.

Sooo... That's just another thing that I don't understand.

Why have the M.A.H.R suddenly decided that this type of music is destructive and harmful for teenagers? Many people I know have been saved by My Chem and The Used, and many have stopped feeling depressed and self harming because of their music...
