| The newsletter and its disappearance | 448 giorni fa | |||
Well, it never showed up in August, and here's why!Basically, Yahoo! is terrible for it. We cannot send it to everyone at once. Also, we are currently looking at ways to improve our communication with the public. We're looking at doing a magazine (free, online format) that will be amazing (I haven't seen any work done yet, so I'm not boasting) Need more info? Log onto our forum : http://www.literaryden.proboards106.... Sorry, but that's the easiest way of doing it. Thankfully the magazine will be easier than that! When I have more info, I'll give it to you through this page. The classic line now - WATCH THIS SPOT!

| Children's Writers and Illustrators Group Conference at Cambridge | 448 giorni fa | |||
I have just returned from a weekend at CWIGC and heard Phillip Pulman, Michael Rosen, Ann Fine, Malorie Blackman and William Nicholson speak among others. This was a very interesting weekend and helps keep me in touch with what is going on in the industry. It seems that the publishers are worried about losing their share of the market to other media companies. Their solution is too age range books. Delegates were not convinced by a connection between age and sales, even content age and sales, especially Phillip Pulman. Micheal Rosen the Children's Laureate spoke about the prescriptive use of Phonics in schools. This has led to the banning of Children's illustrated books in primary schools. He also complained about deskilling of teachers and the discouragement of children to ask questions where they may be wrong. The Society of Authors are running the campaign in the media against age banding children's books, mainly on the belief that banding will discourage children or their adult book purchasers from buying a book. It was suggested that the banding of a book as 7+ would prevent children younger than seven reading a book because adults buy their books. Conversely, eight year olds will think a 7+ book as too babyish. The publishers believe it will increase sales by proving more information to hesitant or confused adult buyers. The only problem is the banding should be reading age, not chronological age. How many children would what to admit a negative rating and how many parents or grandparents know the reading age of each child? My brother thought it a matter of age discrimination, which is topical now. The other major campaign run by the Society of Authors headed by Alan Gibbons, is to stop the British government from closing school libraries and sack librarians to save costs. Staff who object to closures have been threatened. In many schools, the librarian has been sacked and replaced by an unskilled person such as a dinner lady. The British politician's new great idea is prescriptive management of public services and hiding failure. Investigative journalism seems to have died in the UK. The Society itself has not really been effective in getting its views across.

| The Literary Den Songwriting Competition | 488 giorni fa | |||
This Competition is closed - no judging will commence. We apologise to the entrantsRules: The entrant must be the creator of the piece. For bands, at least one member must have written the song. If someone else has written the song, they must give express permission for the entrant to use the lyrics and music, before the entry has been made. This will be looked in to. Lyrics and a link to the music must be given. Music must be made public for the competition, preferably in the form of a Youtube Video. Keywords on the video should include Literary Den as a means of securing the video’s position and authenticity in the competition. Prize: The winning video will be hosted on Literary Mania and Literary Den Bebo pages, and all judges will subscribe to the user’s channel. An Official Literary Den Dust Bunny will be awarded to each band member as a collective group, instruments included. Closing date November 7th Judging Panel: Paul Carroll, Samantha Priestley, Andy Walker You will note the panel is rather large. This is to ensure that there is no bias in the final result of the competition; where one judge may feel they are acting in favour of an entry more than they should, their vote will be discontinued. All entrants will immediately be signed up for the Literary Den Newsletter upon submission. If you do not wish to avail of this service, send an email to that effect to literary_mania@yahoo.ie (the same email address entries should be sent to) The Literary Den wishes to inform people that while the video is a must for entry, this is not the first thing that judges will look at. Rather, the panel will be looking at the lyrics first, and from there the videos to see how the lyrics are put to good use. The quality of the video will not be judged, but if entrants feel that they will not receive a fair judgement due to their recording equipment, the panel will accept the excuse – to put it simply, if you feel that having a 2.0 MP camera on your phone will not do you justice compared to an actual camcorder, simply say so when entering the lyrics and sending the link. Entrants are required to be in the video themselves while playing, and may be required to submit a photograph of his/her-self. The winning act will be asked to supply a brief history of themselves for promotional purposes. About the Judges: Each of the judges are writers in the Literary Den Book of New Fiction 2008, and have a wide point of view on the world of music. Mixed interests allow for the increasing number of teenage performers in particular, although not exclusively. Paul’s main interests lie in Soul and Rock, though in recent times he has come to enjoy many other genres of music, including his once least favourite – Rap. Andy has a large taste in many forms of Rock and Metal and is considered the group’s expert on the topic at present. Sam’s tastes cover Indie and Rock, with some of her favourite bands and artists using acoustic sounds, adding to the variety of music the panel listen to. The diversity amongst the judges is to give as many people as possible a chance in winning, based on their talent rather than their style. Note that the judging panel is subject to change over time, and that all those judging are forbidden from entering the competition. Participation by any judge in an entry/act will result in the immediate disqualification of said judge from the panel and of the entry submitted.

This competion is closed - judging will not commence. We apologise to the entrantsRules: 100 words limit The drawing competition is freestyle - however only email submissions are allowed, for security reasons and for ease of judging. Note that judges will be rewarding contestants for originality of idea and for the actual writing/use of colour/shading. Prizes: For the writing competition the winner will receive an Official Literary Den Dust Bunny designed to be them, as well as reviews of anything they have written, assuming it is easily accessible to the general public. All entrants will immediately be signed up for the Literary Den Newsletter upon submission. If you do not wish to avail of this service, send an email to that effect to literary_mania@yahoo.ie The winners of the above competitions may be required to submit a photograph of themselves, as well as a short biographical history of them, and their writing/drawing experiences. About the Judges: Each of the judges are long time members of the Den, each with their own interests in genre. They are all writers in the Literary Den Book of New Fiction 2008; Paul is one of two founders of the group, while Samantha and Andy were editors for the Den and Anthea performed a large role in the cover’s development in her submission of the Dust Bunny, Shakespeare. Samantha is also a well known writer in Anthologies across the UK and the US, and released her debut novel, Despite Losing it on Finkle Street, in September 2007.
