"Scotlands Best Live Venue 2007"

The Doghouse is situated in the Westport area of Dundee. The venue has a capacity of 350 and is fast becoming one of the best live venues in Scotland. As popularity for local music grows we have started an Open mic Night, on the last Thursday of each month. Free for all, just bring yourself and a guitar if you wish to take part. A chilled night all round.

Also on the last Weds of each month is a Pool Competition, £2 entry with Bar Tabs up for grabs. All Welcome.

  • ELMORE+ THE ONLY JONES+ INDIANAPOLIS+ RUSH HOUR SOUL+ LUVA ANNA @The Dog 23/9/07 by Andy G

Somewhere in between the first one and this last mone, I caught the Thursday night one featuring the Brogues and The Likely Lads and whoever else was there that night. The Likely Lads were way better than last time I saw them, with Brian commenting on their prowess on the rhythm section, while I was admiring the songs and the lead guy's work - good set. The Brogues were also a lot better - tighter and maybe short but to the point, although I still get the feeling they are still rising to the peak they are climbing towards. But I digress.....
As I got there. the evening had started - and it was only just after 8.30!! Not a huge crowd around either, which was a shame as the ones not there missed this fantastically tasty band called Elmore. Not had a chance to look up where they're from yet, but they consisted of players on synths/keys, bass, guitar and vocals, drums and a percussionist. What they played was a solid, tight and flowing blend of funk but with a real difference, the synths giving the whole sound added depth and texture, while the percussionist provided a whole Santana-like empetus for the main body of the rhythm section, of which the bassist was playing some seriously funky stuff. Above all this, as clear as a bell, the guitar player provided a set of crisp, lean leads and sang the band's original material to perfection. There was an unmistakeable air of '80's to it all as echoes of Thompson Twins kept popping up in my head, a comparison that anyone who saw the TT's 2nd live video will understand. But there was also a modern feel in there too which made it all the more unique. With a real finesse, a cutting edge and a whole sense of class, not to mention the irresistibility of movement on behalf of the eye-widened concert attendee, the band were mesmerising. Wherever they're from, if you like quality funk-pop-indie, they've gotta be seen.
The Only Jones were from Glasgow, as they happily stated. Theirs was a style that featured the classic quartet of twin guitars, bass, drums and vocals, as they provided a set that was, once again, dead classy but this time with the guitars providing the instrumental meat. The set was all about the songs, which ranged from upbeat to more Americana styled, with a lot of the songs possessing a commanding quality without necessarily providing a memorable hook or chorus. Although it was the first time I'd seen the band, I do recall wondering that they were almost there but something was missing, while at the same time enjoying two songs in particular that were just superb, one being the closing number and the other a real anthemic track earlier in the set. They played it well and I'd recommend them, but I think they've yet to find the songwriting holy grail, of which the future pursuit should make an interesting journey to watch.
Indianapolis, I loved. More than ever tonight they revealed themselves as the best "album band" around here right now and by that, I mean that you can listen to the tracks that they play in concert and just imagine that they'd make such a good album for home listening. From anthems to rockers to ballads to catchy commercial and, on the two new tracks featured tonight, a more intense side to them, this band might not exactly inspire you to leap about the dancefloor that often during a set, but as songwriters, arrangers and players, they are ina class of their own. Starting with the memorable strains of the current single opener, "Don't Stop", they set the tone for the set, as the high register lead guitar swung into action with serious restraint but so effective as the rhythm section flowed along and Andy's vocal and rhythm guitar work rang out through the venue. The set was very dynamic, the intensity of the first new track balanced by the catchiness of the overtly indie-pop class of "Two Reasons", the rock of "Private Eyes" balanced by the soaring ballad. Then, just as you think you've heard them do it all, the last track becomes a new one, called - and get
