Baines-Chahim <DISSYBAINES>

I am Tsimshian/Tlingit and love my heritage, in which I am of the Killerwhale Clan. I am married to a great Moroccan man, who is very caring and a great beading artist. Some of his work is on the Photos section of this website.
I have a wonderful son who is married and they have a precious 8 year old daughter, and a grandson was born on June 3, 2007 @ 2:19 p.m.! YAY!! What a blessing grandchildren are.
I hold a Master's Degree in Education and love my job, which is working with our precious Metlakatla children.
Since I've completed my education, I've immersed myself in our culture, learning about it, including our language, Shm-AL-gyack (Tsimshian Language). I am so thrilled and satisfied now that I'm able to learn about my heritage. I made a vow that it would be my goal after I graduated from college. So, I am still learning, which is a life-long venture for me. I love it!

treatments
May 11, 2008

Well, I'm on my way to Anchorage again for the next round of chemotherapy. The treatments have been extended 6 months due to the 2 tumors that were treated by radiation.

My hope & prayer is that I will go into remission before the 6 months are up. That is a LONG time to be on chemotherapy since I've already been on it for the last 4 months.

I am thankful that all treatments are working. Thanks to all the love and prayer support I am receiving. I appreciate it so very much and I believe in the power of prayer.

Thanks!

Love, Wilma

still another update
April 19, 2008

We arrived home on April 4th due to the radiation machine breaking down a couple times.
We had to stay a couple extra days to complete the treatments. What a LONG month, so we were so glad to be home!!!

Anyway, I arrived home AND that Saturday my mother tripped on a wire and broke a bone in her arm in the process of trying to catch herself on the coffee table. Ouch!
We brought her to the clinic for X-rays and ended up bringing her to Ketchikan on Monday morning on the ferry. We waited in Ktn @ the super 8 motel for word on when they would operate. We find that they would not operate because it is too risky with her heart condition.
And, I ended up getting sick while in Ktn. So, I came home on the following Thursday after waiting all week to hear that they would not do the surgery. She was referred to Anchorage ANMC for a heart evaluation and surgery. I could not escort her, so thank God for Shelia (my cousin) who volunteered to escort her. She did a fabulous job and Mom's surgery was a success. She arrived home this last Thursday evenining on the ferry. Her flight was late, so they held the ferry till she arrived. Thanks MIC and the Lituya crew! She is home and resting, with Mary (my sister) as her caregiver. She is handicapped now for 6 weeks, so she needs a lot of assistance.

Now, it is time for me to travel back to Anchorage again for the next round of chemotherapy. This was to be my last treatment, but due to the fact that they found two tumors in my spine, I will be undergoing extra chemotherapy treatments. I'm not sure how many extra yet until my appointment this Monday, April 21st. Then I'll go back home on Tuesday the 22nd.
I am looking forward to the word from the doc that I am in REMISSION! I hope real soon!
I am so tired of being sick an tired, but so thankful for the good days that I have at times.
I will be traveling alone this time. My caregiver (my dear hubby) needs a break and besides, this will be such a short, quick trip.

I've been able to go to work most days until 2 p.m. Then I go home and nap for about 1/2 an hour and I'm good until bedtime. I'm doing quite well most of the time.

Again, thanks so much for your prayers and encouragement,
Love,
Wilma & Mohamed

As I face the 4th round of chemotherapy, there were complications.
The mediport was infected, so it had to be surgically removed and I had to wait a week for the 4th round of chemo.
The day before the chemo, I had a bone scan due to some nagging back pains. Two tumors were found in my spine, so I began radiation treatments yesterday, the 13th of March.
I finally had the 4th round of chemotherapy on the 10th and will have the 5th round while we are still here in Anchorage, on the 31st.
We will be here until after the April 1st, which is the last radiation treatments, which will be a total of 14 radiation treatments.
We are weathering the storm of this disease quite well, a day at a time.
Thanks for you support, and prayers,
Wilma & Mohamed

You will be in my prayers every day. I know how drainging chemo can be on your body and spirits....we just moved to Langley and my internet was just hooked back up this week.
I work for Surrey School District with Aboriginal teens as a tutor, until I get into UBC medical school...been studying to take my MCAT's.

I hope you are in good spirits through all this. keep me posted when you can, and get a lot of rest. Take care!
