Chapter 6
 
On the way to lunch, Dave remembered that he had detention and he changed course, and headed towards the detention room. Aleix and I groaned when we remembered that we had an after school detention. I cringed just thinking about what my parents would say when I got home, Imean I had an After school Detention three time last week, one of them was for mitching. I suppose I could lie to them by saying that I was at Aleix's house, but then they could call her parents, and I'd get in trouble for lying. So I guess I'm pretty much screwed. I joined the queue and got some lasagna which was today's special, and went to the table that Jack had saved for us. When I sat down, Jack asked if we didn't mind him sitting with us, we reassured him that we didn't mind he relaxed and him and Aleix started talking, and Laura was finishing her homework that was due for next class. There was a slicence in Jack and Aleix's conversation and I took the opportunity to ask Jack a question. 'So, who did you know that went here? Did he/she move?' I asked Jack. He looked a little uncomfortable and it looked like he might not answer, but then he replied, 'Eh,.. no.. He died a while ago.' Jack explained. 'Who was he?' Laura asked curiosity getting the better of her. I however, had a weird feeling that I knew who it was. 'His name was Daniel Cassidy,he was one of my best friends.' Jack replied to Laura's question. I was right, but not that many people knew Daniel, I mean he was in separate classes to the rest of his year. So how did this stranger know him? I was very confused. 'How did you know my brother?' I asked Jack, in the meantime, Aleix's- one of the few people who knew my brother- mouth went slack with surprise, she gathered herself together, and closed her mouth with an audible snap. She blinked a couple of times and turned on Jack, 'How the hell did you know Daniel? He never told us about you, and he didn't know that much people, so IF you were one of his best friends don't you think he'd have mentioned you? And anyway you shouldn't be talking about him! Can't you see the pain Reyne's in?!' she hissed in his face, by the end of the sentence she was shouting. I looked around and sure enough, the WHOLE cafeteria was watching us, I put my hand on Aleix's shoulder, and she turned to look at me, I knew she was just protecting me, but still she didn't have to scream at Jack, the poor boy looked like he was going to cry.
'Aleix, go for a walk to calm down.' I told her, looking her in the eye.
'But...!'
'Aleix! GO NOW!' I rasied my voice slightly, I was getting a bit mad at her now,and she could see that, so she didn't argue, when I'm in one of my mood's no-one wins an arguement if they're not me. She DID glare at Jack before leaving though. I watched her walk away, and turned to face Jack, everyone was still watching, from the corner of my eye I saw the food that Ben had been about to eat fall off his fork and onto his knee, I smiled, and turned my full attention to Jack. 'Can we talk somewhere else?' I asked him. 'Sure,' he replied. 'Um, why did your friend, Aleix right? Yeah, well why did she turn on me, when I said I knew Daniel?' I glared at him, then grabbed his arm and dragged him out of the cafeteria.

When I found an empty classroom, I went inside and turned to face him. I looked over all 5ft 10'' of him, he had brown hair so dark it could pass as black, his greyish-blue eyes were contorted in confusion and pain, his had was rubbing his arm where I had accidently dug my nails into it, and from the look's of it drawn blood, he had strong cheekbones, and his skin was flawless. I realised with surprise that he was good looking, in the extreme, no wonder Laura was staring at him. Focus Reyne! I mentally slapped myself, but he was cute. 'Aleix is very protective of her friends, she knows what causes them pain, and she will stop anyone who tries to cause them pain, intentionally or not. She knows that talking about Daniel causes me pain, which is why she started to shout at you. You see my brother James and I have been fighting ever since Daniel died, he blames me for Daniels death. And we don't get along as well as we used to, but anyway that's beside the point, so will you please tell me how the hell you know Daniel?' As I told him this the expression on his face turned from one of pain to one of pity, and that really pissed me off. 'Oh, Aleix really care's about her friends then. And I know Daniel becuse we were in hospital for 3 months, we were in the beds beside eachother in the ward.Actually, we were admitted and discharged on the same day.' he laughed at the ironicy of it, and I decided not to join in, the way he explained it made very little sense, Daniel never talked about the friends he made when in hospital, he preferred to text them instead of talk about them, but he would name his best friend's if you asked him, which Laura did once, out of curiosity, and he never mentioned Jack, not once. 'We became quite close, he was one of my best friends, dispite the age difference. And we........... actually nevermind.' Jack finished. we were both sitting on desks by now, now I was confused. I sighed and got up to leave. 'Where are you going?' Jack asked as I walked to the door, while tossing my hair over my sholder. 'To find Aleix, and explain it to her, and to tell her NOT to attack you next time she see's you or when I'm not around,to look after you.' I explained a hint of laughter was in my voice, making it sound like I was joking. I opened the door and walked away, without a backward glance. Now I knew (sorta) how he Daniel, but why was he being so seceretive? And why did he highlight the age diffrence? Nobody else did, everyone who knew Daniel liked him instantly, dispite the fact some where nearly four years older than him. They all came to visit him every weekend, seeing as he couldn't go outside (Mum wouldn't let him), they stayed inside, yes even the ones that were seventeen.

I found Aleix under the big,old oak tree, it was our tree in a way. Ben saw us and came over. Ben is really cool. He's like 6ft tall, and has blonde hair like his twin, who just happens to be Aleix. 'Hey, sis! Hey, Reyne!' he greeted us after he sat down. 'Hi Gargantun!' I returned his greeting, using the nickname that annoy's him most. 'Oh, please don't start that again, Reyne!' he groaned. I stuck my tounge out in reply. 'Anyway sis, why did you have a go at the new kid earlier? What did he do? Stab you with a pencil or something?' Ben teased Aleix, he loved to annoy her. Aleix glared at him, her expression promising violence, 'No, he brought up Daniel, said he knew him or something, I started shouting at him because it was upsetting Reyne.' she said this very slowly, as if she was talking to someone who had learning difficulty. 'Oh.' Ben looked like he wished he hadn't said anything now. Ben and Daniel were quite close, they were never apart, only in class, Ben stayed inside with Daniel at lunch, everyday. Ben poked me and I came out of my daze, I turned to glare at him, but he just smiled and nodded in Aleix's direction. She had, once again fallen asleep under the tree. I just shook my head, and looked at my watch there was ten minutes of lunch left, so I poked her awake. 'Huh?....wha'?' she asked groggily. 'We better get our books the bell is about to ring.' I told her gently, she nodded and got up, we walked to our lockers and got our books for the next three classes, double regligion and Geography.
