Chapter 11 - Half arm, four arms.

“What do we do Instinct?” Matt asked the question into the radio

“OK the first priority is obviously to take care of Stealth. I can’t reattach his forearm, but he needs to be back at base within six hours if I have any hope of keeping what’s left of his arm healthy, but to get him here alive, you need to stop the blood loss from his arm. Hope, find a freezer and bring back as many frozen things as possible to freeze the wound.” Matt got up and went to search the house for a freezer, leaving Hailey alone to take care of Stealth.

“Right Joy, firstly, loosen his clothes around the arm and find something to tie around the top” Hailey looked around and found a dishcloth which had been thrown on the floor, she picked it up and tied it tightly around the top of his arm, the blood pouring from his arm slowed down, but did not completely stop.

“Instinct? I did it but there’s still blood coming from out of his arm” said Hailey, very worried and nervous

“It doesn’t matter, it won’t stop the blood completely, but it will reduce the amount lost, which is all we need to do at the moment, next you need to freeze the arm, so we can’t do anything else until Hope gets back.” Seconds later, Matt ran through the door with his arms full of bags of frozen peas. He dropped them on the floor next to where Hailey and Stealth were and the radio spoke again

“Is that Hope back? OK Hope, we still need to freeze the wound so go back and find anything else in the freezer and bring it back here.”

“This place has plenty in the freezer, don’t worry” Said Matt before running off to fetch more. Instinct continued.

“Joy, Pile the frozen things around his arm, mainly on the wound but put some at the top of the arm and some on the torso near the shoulder” Hailey commenced with putting the peas around the wound, by the time the wound was completely surrounded with the bags of peas, Matt returned with a box full of frozen food, Turkey burgers, Mixed vegetables, Ice creams, Frozen meats and even a chicken and mushroom pie. Hailey took them and placed them around the top of his arm and on his shoulder. Soon, the cold had stopped the blood flowing in his arm and the pool of blood underneath him stopped growing at such an immense rate.

There was still some blood leaving, but if his arm stayed frozen, they would be able to get him back to the base without any serious or even fatal blood loss.

“Hope, find something to hold all this frozen food in place.” Matt looked through the drawers in the kitchen for sellotape or something similar and found some bandages and some medical tape. He threw them to Hailey, who started tying the bandage around his arm so that the frozen things were held in place.

“Well done, you two, that took about twenty minutes, so just get him back to base in 5 and a half hours and he’ll be fine.”

Matt and Hailey dragged Stealth’s still unconscious body to his feet and supported him between them, dragging him along until he could wake up. Once they had dragged him to his feet, he came around, as if on cue.

“Where the hell am I? Oh no, Hope, Joy, He didn’t kill you too did he?”

“Don’t worry big guy, you ain’t dead yet” said Matt mockingly.

“Just leave me here.” Said Stealth, finally noticing that he was being dragged. “I’m no use to the warriors anymore; I can’t arch with one and a half arms”

“We’re taking you back to Instinct and we’re not arguing about it.” Hailey said firmly.

“OK then, can you at least let me try and walk on my own?” Stealth asked, determined not to slow Matt and Hailey down. He didn’t seem to realise that the urgency to return to base was because of him, or more specifically his detached arm. Matt and Hailey reluctantly let go, allowing Stealth to attempt walking by himself. He was slightly nauseous and stumbled the first steps, and as the two behind him ran to catch him, he regained his balance and managed to walk slowly for the next few steps but it wasn’t long until he started stumbling again.

Matt went up to him and put Stealth’s good arm around his neck. Stealth took the support as reluctantly as Matt and Hailey had originally taken it away from him, but he knew he needed it whether he wanted it or not. They approached the door and Hailey opened it for them.

Waiting outside was a group of about 4 or 5 people who had presumably heard all the noise and racket from inside the house and gathered to find out exactly what caused it. As soon as the door opened, the gossiping voices of the people in front of them went silent. Hailey stared into the curious faces of the small crowd, and turned back into the house, mumbling that she would catch Matt and Stealth up as she passed them.

The people outside the house were just standing there, staring at them half in fear and half in amazement. Matt felt uncomfortable under their glare, but he pushed through them and walked down the road. One man from the group started to follow Matt warily. Matt went round the corner at the end of the road, glad to be away from the nosy neighbours but he still looked back to check if Hailey was coming yet. She wasn’t.

“Stealth?” asked Matt as he was half dragging him down the road.

“What’s up?” responded Stealth, his voice still strong despite the make-shift icepack freezing his shoulder, and the half arm that the icepack was covering up.

“How do you know if you’re in love?”

“That’s a hard one. I don’t think I’ve ever been in love.” Stealth broke into a fit of coughing, and Matt stopped walking to give him a chance to recover. Once Stealth was ok again, he carried on “I suppose you’d just know, if you know what I mean?”

“No, I don’t.” at that second, they heard running footsteps behind them, and Turned to see Hailey coming toward them.

“It’s her isn’t it?” whispered Stealth

“Yeah, don’t tell her please” Matt whispered back as she came closer.

“I won’t” whispered Stealth again, slightly quieter now, as Hailey was getting closer.

“What did you do?” asked Stealth, voice beginning to show some strain.

“I hid Sorrow. I also picked up his sword.” Said Hailey. “He said something about it being “Eve” didn’t he? So I picked it up to take back to base, seeing as it’s obviously special in some way.”

“Yeah but he also said mine were in Rahn’s armoury. I’m holding mine now, so that can’t be right can it?”

“Well even so, it can’t hurt to have an extra sword around can it?”

It was all good having an extra sword around, but there was no way that they could take the train back from Gretna Green.

They decided to go back to the train station anyway, to find the nearest station they could walk to. They got there, and found an irritated looking policeman standing in front of the station entrance, which was covered with police tape.

Hailey, went up to ask him, but was told very rudely that ‘it wasn’t his business to find the station for a little kid’.

Hailey came back to Matt and Stealth, who were just around the corner, trying to avoid questions about Stealth’s condition from the officer.

“Nothing” said Hailey as he reached them.

“Excuse me?” Said an elderly voice from behind them, which made all three of them jump.

“You’re looking for the next station?”

It was an old lady, Matt recognised her from the train.

“Yes please, do you know where the nearest one is?”

“It about a mile south in Chefries, I take the train to get to my grandkids at Christmas and birthdays”

“Thank you Ma’am” Said Matt politely.

“No, thank you. I’ve still got life in these old bones thanks to you kids”

They laughed and bade the lady goodbye, before heading south in search of Chefries.

They set off for Chefries, stopping occasionally to check if Stealth was alright and swapping the duty of being his support. After about half an hour, the three of them finally came across Chefries. The first thing they saw of it was a seemingly abandoned park. According to the sign, it was called Chefries Community Park and it was also home to Lake Chefries. As they took their first steps into the park, a thin mist started to take effect around them, growing slowly thicker, not too thick to obscure their vision, but still thick enough to block out the distance, making the park seem separate from the world.

The air in the park grew distinctly colder as they travelled further into the park, and Matt felt that even though he was supporting Stealth, he was distant from the rest of the world, isolated from everyone else, separated from even from his very own emotions. Hailey must have felt it too, as she reached out for Matt’s hand. It gave the both of them some warmth, but even so, they still felt isolated, they still felt alone.

The mist seemed even thicker around the area of the lake, and the closer they got, the colder it got. As they finally passed the lake, they saw the reason the park had been abandoned.

They saw the outline of a man in the mist, but it was no regular man. It didn’t stand upright, more of at an angle, and his back was bend forwards slightly, making him stand even more awkwardly. He seemed to spot the three of them, and started to walk towards them. He had a limp, which seemed to be hurting both of his legs. As he got closer, Matt was taken aback. He had 4 arms. Each of those arms was holding a specifically terrifying looking sword.
The man looked as if he was in extreme pain, like he had been put in this world against his will. The man was supposed to be somewhere else, somewhere peaceful and calm, not the chaotic world of reality.

He was close enough for Matt to see his face, and when he looked into the mans eyes, he saw pain, suffering, torture and anger. He saw a man who was inches away from death, yet couldn’t quite get there, but that wasn’t why Matt was so horrified. Matt was horrified because although his face had been scarred bruised and discoloured, Matt saw who the man was. He looked into his eyes and saw his Father looking back at him, with the same familiar look of hate Matt was used to getting. This time it was real. It wasn’t faked. Matt could tell. Rahn had control over his dad.
