Chapter 5 - The Past (Part II)

When Saint arrived at the hut, he immediately noticed how small it was. The land around it was full of towering trees, beautiful flowers, and smooth green grass, while the hut itself was tiny, made of wood and stone. At first it had looked out of place in the landscape, but it had been here for as long as Saint had remembered it, and Saint couldn’t picture the place without it, although it was possibly because he would be here if Kawoir’s hut wasn’t here too.

He knocked on the door and a man opened it. He was about the same height as Saint and appeared to be in his late 40’s. He had silver hair which hung down to halfway down his back. He had a long flowing black robe and held a staff topped with a silver carving of a raven’s head.

“Ah, Saint, Hester told me you’d arrive soon” Kawoir’s voice was strong, had it not been that Saint had been here many times before, he would have been knocked back at how such a powerful voice could come from such an old, frail body.

Then you know why I’m here” Saint said. He looked into the Shaman’s eyes and felt them examining him.

“You are here Saint, because our freedom is almost over. You are here because you know you will fail and you are here because you wish to give the world of the future some form of hope”

“Yes Kawoir. Regrettably, but yes. That is why I’m here”

“Then here. Take this and guard it well, that prophecy has been enchanted so that it will not decay as you do, just make sure you fall where Rahn cannot find you.” He said, handing Saint a piece of parchment.

Saint took the Parchment and hid it in his armour. He walked outside without saying another word, but Kawoir called him back. He turned at the door to address Kawoir.

"Saint? You’re sure you want to do this?” Saint simply nodded, took another step out the door and turned to see Hester watching him from the roof of the hut.

“This it then Hester.”

“It is”

Saint began walking towards the place of the battlefield and Hester jumped down from the roof, changing from Hawk to Wolf as he fell. The two didn’t say a word to Hester the whole way. They were both thinking, and didn’t want to spoil the little time they had left together.

Halfway to the battleground a birdcall could be heard and from the sky came a glorious bird with golden feathers bright as the rays of the sun itself. It landed on the ground in front of Saint and Hester, folding its wings behind its back.

“How is Instinct?” Saint asked the phoenix anismastis.

She is well, but I have been sent here by her bearing terrible news, Joy is unable to fight”

The news fell down on Saint, and he felt as if he’d been pressed into the ground. “Injured or fatal?” inquired Saint with a heavy heart.

“Dead” came the reply which Saint had been least hopeful to hear. It was whispered to preserve Joy’s honour, and Saint dared not enquire how she’d gone.

“Her army?”

“Brainwashed.”

“Then regrettably, we have no choice. If we leave it any longer, Rahn will pick more of us off.
With just 7 of us left, we cannot continue with the original plan and we will have to go ahead with our backup. Go to the others and tell them to prepare their armies for war, we strike tonight. Hester, go with him.” Hester obeyed and took off in his Hawk form and the phoenix anisma followed.

About two hours later, Saint was standing atop a rock in front of his army of at least 1 500 men.

Most of these men would not live to see tomorrow and although he regretted it, there was no other option. He cleared his throat and began to talk; his voice more powerful and influential then it had ever been before.

“This is it men. Today marks the change of the world. No” he corrected himself “Today marks the start of a whole new world. Today is the day that Rahn falls” he paused, and a cheer of enthusiasm came from his followers. He continued.

“All will not be well however. Many of us will die, but all we can do is accept it. Rahn’s armies are greater in numbers but ours are more experienced, ours are more skilful and ours will be triumphant” More eruptions of support from every single one of the 1 500 in front of him and he continued.

“Now many of you will wonder why we are reverting to an allied assault on Rahn’s forces. I will be honest with you, the answer is that Joy has passed away, and Rahn has taken her army. We have only 7 groups now and we can not continue our piece by piece stealth attack. Our only option is combining our forces and taking Rahn on directly. I urge you, together we can stop
Rahn, together we can make the future free of his evil, together, we can win” One final roar of support and Saint held his sword high in the air and brought it down in front of him, facing west.

The army of Saint recognised the war signal and ran, weapons raised, spirits high. The Great War had begun.

Instinct was walking towards a large building, with a confident pace and 600 men behind her. She approached the front gates and moved her weapon, a sword of length about 2 and a half foot, in a motion to signal an attack. The soldiers behind her moved forwards as one and in almost an instant the gate was destroyed, on the floor in pieces and the men trampled it, gaining entrance to the building. A loud crash and a great amount of sharp sticks fell from above, killing about 30 men. An alarm rang through the building, but Instinct was outside still while half her men were inside the building, the other half pouring in slowly. Once all the men were in, she followed slowly and found that the guards had arrived to try to quell the attackers, but they were having trouble moving in the cramped interior. Instinct looked and saw the bodies of her men and of the guards lying on the floor and sprang into action. She took her sword and swung it left and right, looking for the guards and driving her sword where it was needed, constantly progressing through the entrance building in Rahn’s army’s base.
