Chapter 9 - The Long Road to Scotland

Gain picked up the small handheld organizer that the man who had gone to the roof had. It was just like any normal handheld that you would expect to see, but once Gain had managed to get through the security passwords and codes, he could see that it was so much more.
There were [finish]

Matt, Hailey and Stealth were on a train, on their way to where the servants of Rahn who had attacked them at base had been told to go. Once Gain had cracked the security on the radio, the warriors saw that it was much more than a radio, it had an built in map, among other functions and the co-ordinates that were in there lead to a small town on the border of England and Scotland called Gretna.

They had been riding the train for twenty minutes now and they had been told that the journey would take at least three hours. Matt was sitting next to Hailey and Stealth was sleeping behind them.

“Matt?” said Hailey, slightly nervously

“What is it?” asked Matt.

“Can I tell you something?”

“Sure, anything.”

“I, I miss my mom, I just keep thinking of her and of how we never got the chance to talk often.” Said Hailey, her heart pulling at every word

“I know, I miss my dad too, It feels like Rahn took him from me too soon.” Matt replied, with nearly the same effect that Hailey’s words had had on her.

“I just, I just wish that she was here with me now.” She said, stammering because she couldn’t concentrate on her words, tears forming slowly in the corners of her eyes. She took a moment to steady herself and think of her words before continuing “She’d be so proud of what I was doing. Even if I don’t know what it is, my mother would back me, She’d say I was standing up for what I believed in and she’d help me through every step of it. My dad was the same, whenever I was sad, he’d tell me ‘Chin up, young Lass, there’s a whole future ahead of you’ and he’d look me in the eye and smile. I had no choice but to laugh because he always knew how to cheer me up.”

The tears in Hailey’s eyes were running down her face which was bright red from the thoughts of her parents. Matt didn’t know what he could say, so he decided not to say anything. He simply put his arm around her and she put her head onto his shoulder. Matt tried to be as comforting as he could, and she sat there crying out all the tears she had for her parents. Matt felt guilty. He was half enjoying this. Hailey had come to him for comfort, and he was sitting here, with her head on his shoulder. He hugged her, trying to put as much into it as he could.

Her anisma was sitting on her lap and Kaman rushed from Matt’s shoulder down to where the Arctic Fox was sitting, and she brushed her fur up against Soyanamon’s. Hailey stayed there, In Matt’s arms until the third hour of the journey, when the train slowed at the Gretna Green Railway station, and Stealth awoke from behind them.

“Come on you two, this is our stop.” Hailey looked up and reluctantly let go of Matt’s arm. Matt took his arm from around her, and it was possibly the last thing he ever wanted to do. That journey with her had been one of the only times in his whole life that he had been that close to someone, physically and psychologically.

Matt stepped out onto the train station and was thrown forwards onto a packed platform. People started running and screaming, dashing towards the exit. Matt got kicked in the head a few times before he could sit up, and when he did, he looked around for what had knocked him forwards so suddenly. The train was on fire. Stealth was lying next to him on the ground and he got up first, shouting something to Matt, but Matt could not hear him. He understood what Stealth was saying though, and scrambled up, only to lose his footing again and fall back to the ground.

Stealth rushed to Matt and helped him to his feet, when Matt was finally standing he looked back at the train to see that the fire was spreading towards them. Matt’s hearing returned to him slowly. At first he couldn’t make anything distinctly out, then he could tell people were screaming, although he only heard them quietly. It slowly got louder. The next thing he heard was someone shouting at his side, he turned and saw it was Stealth. He was shouting Matt’s name, trying to get his attention, but Matt was dazed from trying to regain his hearing, and couldn’t move. Stealth shook him violently, and Matt heard him shouting ‘Matt snap out of it’.

The final thing he heard was the fire. He knew his hearing was back to normal again, and forced himself to run.

They all ran to the stairs with the crowd, but when Matt heard more screaming he realised that people back there were still in danger. He turned to the train and saw that the door had shut and there were people inside the train, banging against the windows. He grabbed Stealth’s arm and pointed back at the train and the fire.

“If we don’t stop that fire, it will put all these people in danger”

“We can’t Matt; we can only hope that the fire officials will get here.”

“Stealth, there are people still in the train, we need to help them”

Stealth tried to argue, but Matt was holding his shoulder, and he could see the worried look in Matt’s eyes.

“OK Matt, you’re right, but how are we going to stop that thing?”

“There’s a fire extinguisher over there, but it’s on the other side of the fire”

Stealth put his case down and took his bow from inside, putting an arrow into it and firing it straight in to the centre of the extinguisher. Foam spilled out from the hole made by the arrow, but it was not enough to stop the fire entirely. Matt took one sword from his case and ran towards the still spreading flames. He held the sword down by his side and walked into the flames. Stealth understood what he was doing and fired an arrow at the door to the train which had shut and jammed. Matt quickened his pace and Saint fired three more arrows. Matt was close to the train now and he jumped up; putting his feet on the arrows wedged in the door and climbed to the roof. He brought the sword down into the roof and carved a hole put of the metal, just enough for him to fit into.

Matt climbed into the train and saw that five people were in the train still.

“The door just shut in front of us, I think the fire got to the electrics because the lights are dead too” said one passenger.

“Don’t worry, I’ll get you out” said Matt assuringly.

He looked around and went towards the front of the train. The door to the driver’s cabin had also shut, but this was a thinner material than the door of the train and Matt could cut the handle off, forcing the door open. He found what he was looking for in here and hit the switch for the emergency generator. A loud buzzing and he heard the door of the train open and turned back into the main body of the train to see that the people inside the train had left. He followed them out and saw Stealth and Joy waiting there for him.

“Run” Matt shouted to them. As he finished saying it, an explosion came from behind him. The backup generator he had turned on had met the fire with disastrous consequences. They made it up the stairs and out into the open to be met with the sound of panic. People were rushing around and shouting. Matt, Hailey and Stealth ran through the crowd and down streets and alleys until they were sure they were alone. Stealth gave Matt his case and the three of them put on their armour. It would make them stand out, but they needed the protection.

Matt Hailey and Stealth were now in full armour, walking around the streets. Even though Sorrow was the one they were looking for, they didn’t know what to look for. Instead they decided to look for Rahn’s servants. They saw 3 suspicious people, but all of them had their arms covered up.

There was one woman, who they only saw once, but she was speaking into a mobile phone, and Matt could have sworn he heard her say the word Rahn. Matt tried to tail her, but soon lost her. Matt went back to the other two, and they didn’t see her again.

Then there were two men [conthere] had passed them multiple times. Each time they passed, the men would be together, talking in hushed voices. The first man was about 30 years old with blonde hair, cut short. The second was in his 40’s and had grey hair in a ponytail which didn’t reach far past his shoulders.

They had been walking for about 30 minutes, accumulating many looks of astonishment, most likely due to the fact that not only were they walking around in full armour, but also that they were walking pretty much in circles, with no obvious objective. One little boy had even asked for an autograph because he believed they were three samurais from one of his favourite movies.

They heard gunfire and sprang into action, running towards where the shots had come from.

They got there about a minute later to see sorrow throw the man in his fifties to the ground. The other man however, had grabbed him, costing Sorrow the use of his arms. Matt and Hailey ran in together, while Stealth took his bow out, firing an arrow into the chest of the man on the ground, killing him instantly.

Matt and Hailey drew their swords and held them in front of them. Matt was a faster runner than Hailey, so he reached the man first. The man threw Sorrow to the ground and pulled out his gun. Matt lifted his sword and brought in down swiftly on top of the man’s right arm, which fell to the ground on top of Sorrow. The man seemed to ignore the pain and used the fist which was still attached to his arm, punching Matt in the arm. He followed this punch with a powerful roundhouse kick, which knocked Matt backwards. As Matt stumbled, Sorrow twisted his body around and kicked the man in the leg hard, bringing him to the ground. By now Hailey had reached the fight and she pushed her sword into the neck of the man.

“Who are you people” asked Sorrow

"Were the people who just saved your life” replied Stealth, who was now walking over from his arching point.

“Oh, I’m sorry, where are my manners? My name is Aston. You’ve saved me twice now.”

“Twice?” Questioned Hailey

“Yes, twice. I was stuck in that train.”

“Oh, I remember you now.” Said Matt. He had been the person next to the man who told him that the electrics had gone out on the train.

“You’re not from here then? Stealth asked.

“No, I was visiting my Nan, she lived down the street.”

“Lived?” Said Matt, slightly confused.

“Oh” He paused “They killed her. The men who came. She was about to give me something and they just came in, asking for me. My mom told me to go out back and they killed her and my Nan. Then they came out side and started firing at me, and then you showed up. Were they after the thing my Nan was going to give me? Are you after it?”

“No, we’re here because we believe you could be destined to join our band of warriors”

“Seriously?” Although he didn’t actually look that surprised

“Yeah, come with us.”

“Before you go back to your base, can I go back to my Nan's house and get... whatever it was she was going to give me?”

“Sure” said Stealth.

Two minutes later they were outside his Nan’s house and Sorrow was inside. Stealth was talking to Matt and Hailey.

“I don’t trust him.” He said

“What are you saying?” asked Hailey.

“I’m saying we never said anything about our base. I’m saying there were only two gunshots and he described at least 3. I’m saying there’s no sign of any assault on this house. I’m saying I don’t trust him and I’m gonna find out why.”

He climbed in though the open window and silently looked around. The insides of the house were kept immaculately. Nothing was out of place, there were no signs of any struggle happening here and no-one was in the house, alive or dead except him and Sorrow. So Sorrow had lied about his Nan and Mom dying here. He heard voices coming from upstairs and went up silently and stealthily. Stealth found the room that he was looking for and sat outside the door, listening.

“Yes, I’m with them now. Yes, they’re buying it. I found the sword here, just where you said it would be. OK I’ll go now.” Footsteps, then the door handle turned. Out came Sorrow with armour on, the same as Stealth’s own amour, and a sword, about the length of his arm. Stealth, who was hiding behind the door, leaped out and punched Sorrow in the face, catching him unaware. He staggered backwards and fell down the stairs, hitting the bottom with a crash of metal from his armour. He grabbed the wall and pulled himself up, his fingers aching from hitting them on the handrail, but otherwise unhurt.

Stealth ran down the stairs and threw his arm into Sorrow’s face, but this time Sorrow was ready and he swung his mighty sword around, catching Stealth’s hand and severing three of his fingers. Stealth was in terrible pain but he ignored it the best he could and threw his knee into Sorrow’s chest, at the same time shouting Matt and Hailey for help. Sorrow brought his sword again and this time hit Stealth’s other arm, cutting off his entire forearm in one movement. He shouted from the pain and fell backwards into the wall, trying to hold onto it for support. His two remaining fingers were not strong enough to hold him up and he slumped to the floor, quickly losing blood, slowly losing consciousness.
