| Factors that Influence the Choice Making Process. | |||
| “The great blessings of mankind are within us, and within our reach, but we shut our eyes, and, like people in the dark, we fall foul upon the very thing we search for, without finding it.” - Seneca (Lucius Annaeus Seneca) I have mentioned in the previous chapter that the process of acceptance or rejection of alternatives constitutes the process of choice making. And that the process and ability to decide on one thing or conduct in favour of another constitutes the exercise of the free will - to choose! Also, the overall name for the ultimate choice that is made, and the process involved in it, is called judgment. If we judge rightly, and we execute our intention rightly, happiness will leave its house for ours. I will now consider the factors that influence judgment. These factors are the elements that make us to choose between one thing and another. They cause us to conduct our affairs in a particular way or to choose specific alternatives. These factors determine our direction and hence establish if we will be happy or not. Without thinking about it, they act subtly to make us behave in a certain way. Let me deal with issue of mistake from the outset. Mistake is a situation where an unintended/undesirable result occurs. The important thing to note here is that as I will explain later, that there are outside forces, which we must take into account, which influence our decision/intentions and the possible outcomes. Without taking this fact into consideration in the context of fore-knowledge or wisdom, we may fail to achieve happiness. Now let me return to the matter of choice. Survival and self preservation It is common knowledge that any rational living thing (including plants) act to ensure that it remains alive. Human beings are no different. The only exception to this general rule is when the disease of depression is present which, in some cases, causes individuals, or groups (to reach a suicide pact), to want to terminate their own lives. Strangely enough, depression is in most cases, an indication of prolonged, deep seated unhappiness. Depression may sometimes result from a ‘wrong’ desire, intention or act having been made. Suffice to say that, depression may also result from ‘unknown’ causes or influences (for example, someone else’s (or a couple’s) decision, say the combination of genes or chemicals when a new individual is conceived) that now result in depression but are not necessarily always the result of bad decisions. Remember that our present mood, sadness or happiness, is a result of previous desires, intentions and acts..... | |||
