Chapter 1

“Hurry up Nic! Come on! The chauffeur’s ready and you are making him wait!”
Nicola rushed around her room picking things up one by one. Her father had forgotten to tell her that she was going back to school a week early. She was told this, this morning at 9 am when she was woken ever so gently with breakfast. Straight away Nicola was expecting something to happen. So she had an hour to pack, and an hour to get ready, or so her father said. Nicola wasn’t really one of those self-obsessed it girls, she didn’t wear much make up and didn’t take any more than half an hour to get ready. Therefore she had some extra time, but it didn’t last long because she had lost her credit card, her mobile and her laptop. Oh and she had forgotten to e-mail her friends to ask them to join her at school. She’d have to do it in the car.
After 10 minutes or so, and a lot of shouting down the intercom from her father, she was ready to leave. Her Gucci bag now contained her laptop, mobile and credit cards, along with some other stuff. But she slid into the back of her Dad’s 30ft limo and sat alongside her father, who was surprisingly joining her for the journey.
“So darling, are you looking forward to school again” Nicola stared at her father, why even ask the question, he already knew the answer. But Nicola couldn’t take 3 hours of silence, so she decided to talk.
“Not particularly, but I guess that I’ll have lots of time this week to finish my new designs”
“Oh, that’s what you’ve been doing is it? I hope they are as good as your last batch was. I earned a £2million profit in a week from them. You must follow you father then. Just as well though, you can inherit the business!” Nicola’s Dad was so chuffed that she could design clothes, bags and everything. He had been running his own fashion line for nearly 30 years now. Nicola never mentioned it, but thought that his designs were suited for an older range of people, so she started designing some things for a younger audience. Her designs really were fabulous. They were seen at the Oscar’s on Hollywood’s finest young stars. She herself had worn some along to some fashion shows.
“The designer for the rich and famous” that was the slogan. That wasn’t meant horribly but they were the only people who could afford them. Her Dad had a thing for expensive material and he sold his designs at, at least $10,000 per item. His most expensive so far was a diamond incrusted dress, made with silk and satin, and all sorts of phenomenally expensive material. It was amazing, you fell in love with it straight away, the only problem was it cost over $4 million. But believe it or not they had sold over 20 of them.
On the long and tiring journey to the airport, Nicola managed to squeeze in some sleep. She had also remembered to e-mail her friends. So far Alex and Kirsten had replied. Alex was going to school in 2 days and Kirsten in 4. So she was still on her own for 2 days. At the airport she sat in the departure lounge waiting for the plane to board. She was sat here all alone in the first class lounge. Her and a load of middle age people. All of them dressed in business suits and talking quickly on phones, oblivious to the world around them.
“Please will all First Class passengers to Los Angeles, come to the desk and prepare for boarding” She listened as the announcement was made for her to board. Picking up her things she made her way to the desk and waited for boarding to start.
Nicola lived in Miami. She loved the amazing views from her bedroom and the amazing beaches, but she missed having all her friends there with her. Alex lived in New York, Amelia shared her time between LA and Italy, and Kirsten shared hers between Germany or Chicago. Then there was Connor in Australia and Ben in San Francisco. This summer though Ben had been staying in New York with Alex but he went to his grandparents in Orlando last week. They were going to meet up this week but she couldn’t now she had to go to school early. She did leave a message on the end of her e-mail.
“Please my I see you’re boarding pass, miss” Nicola pulled out her free flyer card and gave it to the hostess.
“Oh, sorry miss. I didn’t see you on the list.” Nicola took her card back and put it back into her bag. She walked through the doors and out into the warm air, and began to climb the steps onto the plane.
As she did, she thought to herself what a good friend Connor was, he made his parents give all 5 of his friends a free flyer pass. That was the bonus of your Dad owning an airline, well and a hotel chain, so they also got free accommodation. They all gave each other things. Nicola gave them all clothes, Ben gave them the latest music, Alex also provided them with music and concert tickets, Amelia gave them films and tickets to premieres and Kirsten well she gave us cars to drive, but only on their parents property. So between them all they were pretty much sorted, they all had the perfect lives.
Nicola sat down in the leather seat, at the very front of the plane, in the VIP area. Connor’s Dad insisted that the First Class area of every plane had a VIP area, where VIP’s or friends could sit as well as family, without being disturbed. On the floor she found a bag containing all the latest films that weren’t even in the box office yet. ‘To Nicola, Have a Great Flight, See You Soon, Amelia’ She thought to herself how great her friends were. In just 2 hours Amelia had arranged these films to be taken to the airport and put in the plane. Nicola had no idea how Amelia did it but she was thankful. She got straight on the phone and arranged for a Prada bag, a pair of Gucci sunglasses and a bag of make-up to be sent to Amelia. She sat back in her seat and slowly drifted off to sleep.

Ben rang the airport as quickly as he could and straight away read out his free flyer ID no. They put him through to the office.
“I need you to delay flight OL037.”
“I’m afraid that flight is boarded and ready to leave in 15 minutes. We can’t possibly delay it now. I’m sorry sir. You’ll have to get the next flight.” The desk operator spoke so slowly it made Ben angry. He was in a rush, could the operator not tell that by the sound of his voice.
“I have to get on the plane. Can’t you say that there are technical difficulties? They always do that on films. Please I’m an hour from the airport is there not something you can do?”
“I’ll speak to the Pilot, please hold for a minute.”
