Grand Finale

Grand Finale
By Austin Edwards

I am barreling down the road,
at pace of a driven man,
with the ambitions of a drunken one,
the false appearance like I have a plan,

When a man approaches,
with a trailing dog behind,
whispers a phrase as he passes,
"you should have left it behind"

Just a smile on my face,
didn't really hear and listened even less,
as the train reaches the platform,
off steps a girl in a flowing dress.

Not of this time, how unique,
taps me on the shoulder and with a smile,
says "sorry you didn't drop something..
can't you see, to notice now would be worth your while".

No time to ask questions,
for the train will soon be leaving,
just a crazy widow I suppose,
yeah thats it she's in grieving,
she had been muttering to herself all day I presume,
empty words without meaning.

Destination reached and now I alight,
in such a rush down the road,
no time to double check the light

my mind a million miles away,
satisfaction in my confidence and pace,
like a rhino to my legs, my rag doll elegance and expressionless face.

A moment of slow motion yet cant seem to look around,
glimpse of sky, a glimpse of a car then the ground,
a mixture or gasps and screams as if played in fast forward,
all I hear and then exit all sound.

A man looking over me mouthing words I cannot hear,
such panic in his eyes, a glance to his hand and overwhelming fear.

He steps away from me,
there is blood on his hand,
but it was just behind my head,
its my blood, I have been hit
why can't I panic?
If I am hurt then I can't feel it.

A crowd, an Audience, I want to smile,
slight shame its the biggest one I ever got,
I may not have entertained them,
but I have definitely affected them..I can see they're distraught.

I was so caught up in my pace,
now the day seems so clear,
messages from strangers I dismissed,
trying to prevent me from ending up here.

Now two men hover over me,
they both wear that jacket that summarizes safety,
I can't understand his questions,
In is eyes we share a moment, we both know its too late for me.

He holds my hand real tight as if I was his son,
it doesn't seem to affect him too much,
he makes his lips real thin, I can see his throat swallow and looks me in the eye,
then against my will my eyes roll back and I just slowly look towards the sky.

A quick reel of every photograph of me,
mixed in with every girl I have ever kissed,
every friend that made me laugh until it hurt,
every midday smile at another day of school that I skipped.

I say its quite the dramatic scene and all these people here to witness my last breath,
I wish someone could take an overhead picture of this grand finale..
Someone blare mozart's requiem from a rooftop
For this is my one and only Death.
The End
