| AA Gun | |||
| The officer who had been commanding us was Colonel Harold Shafer. He had served two tours in Vietnam and was deployed to the desert in Operation Desert Storm but, like many others, didn’t get to see any action out there. His great military career had come from his time in Vietnam where he also fought in Hue City. Now he was in Fallujah with me, Wade, Kevin and a girl called Joan in a Humvee. Joan was driving and Kevin was in the machine gun. We were going to find and destroy an enemy AA gun. “I love this city,” said the colonel, “It reminds me of Nam… What do you think Sergeant?” “It’s great sir… This is what I joined the Corps for.” “We’re here sir,” said Joan. She stopped the Humvee outside a three story building. “Lock n load,” said the colonel. The colonel picked up his W1200 Shotgun and jumped out the door, followed by me and Wade… Then a machine gun position on the second floor started firing at the Humvee and we took cover. Kevin fired at the machine gun and killed him. Then the man was replaced and Kevin fired again. This time the machine gun was history… Then some more insurgents broke through the boarded windows and started firing at us with their AK’s. “Private… Cover us while we get into the building,” said the colonel, “Joan… Let’s go!!” Kevin let down plenty of fire while we got into the building. Joan picked up her M16A2 and jumped out of the Hummer and joined us as we dashed over to the target building… Wade kicked the door down and the colonel walked in with his gun raised. We followed. The colonel shot an insurgent trying to come down the stairs and then pumped his shotgun. Meanwhile Kevin was firing the machine gun when he was hit in the stomach. He fell back into the Hummer and stayed put… “Hey, Kevin stopped shooting,” I said. We went back to the door and called, “Kevin… Are you alright?” “I’ve been hit,” he roared back, “It hit me in the stomach.” Me and Wade dashed over the Hummer. Wade opened the back door and then fired at the insurgents in the window while I dragged Kevin out of the Hummer… I dragged him into the building and then Wade followed… Joan pulled off his vest and then checked his wound. “The vest slowed it down… It barely got through, none of his organs have been harmed,” she said. She pulled the bulled out of his stomach as it was half in half out. Then she pulled the towel off of one of the dead insurgent’s heads and wrapped it around Kevin’s wound. “You okay son?” asked the colonel. “Yes sir,” replied Kevin as he put his vest back on… “Roger, you cover Kevin while—” Wade was interrupted by Kevin. “No serge I’m okay,” Kevin said. “You sure?” asked Wade. Kevin nodded… Kevin picked up an Ak 47 off the floor and took some ammo off the dead insurgent’s body… Once again the colonel moved up the stairs to the first floor. He kicked the door down and went into a room with three insurgents watching TV really loud. They went for their guns but we opened up on them… We then moved up to the second floor and fired at the insurgents at the window. Then the third floor and up to the roof… On the roof there was a lot of sandbags. The AA gun was manned and was surrounded with a wall of sandbags bigger than sandbag walls usually are… There was also two machine gun positions to the left and right of it… We dashed over to a sandbag wall near the door and fired at the machinegun positions. They returned fire and were joined by some more insurgents. The colonel pulled a grenade off his belt that I had never seen before. “Is that a—” asked Wade “Yap,” replied the Colonel. He pulled the pin and threw it… “Holy shit… Take cover!!” roared Wade. Everyone ducked as a huge explosion came from the grenade. It was a White phosphorus grenade. It had completely whipped out the sandbag position on the left. The insurgents on the right were coughing because of the smoke from the grenade. We shot them all except for one who dashed over to the AA and started firing at us with it… “Shit… Colonel, you got anymore Willie Pete’s?” asked Wade… The colonel pulled out another WP and threw it at the AA gun. We waited a few seconds before getting up and walking over to the AA gun… The man who had manned it was lying on the floor next to it screaming and on fire… The colonel shot him in the head and then planted some C4 and setting it off… We then went downstairs and back to the Humvee. | |||
